So can we make our own shaders? Here's hoping blizz included a way to import and export to collada and other model formats.

Red classic.

Of course, as long as the format is known. Shaders, models, and portraits are the 3 unknowns ATM.

Do you guys have access to the editor? If so, I have a question: How many subunits (read turrets) can you place on a unit, and can you issue orders to them dynamically based on any arbitrary piece of data? Also, can you interact with weapons in the editor? Both of these will effect the map I am currently planning.

I don't think they do :(

I have it downloaded and installed but I cannot find the actual maps.

I think maps are downloaded once in the game, and replays are actually stored online somewhere iirc.

Sounds like what I thought they'd do, to protect premium maps.

...so wait.. What are we going to do when we want people to DL maps from SEN? *is confused*

there will be away, i am guessing they will have a custom map file/ and then premium maps/starcraft maps are stored somewhere that you can't access like on your account online or something.

Looks like there are a lot of modding capabilities.
You can add new races, achievements, units, and more.

The file formats are very simple. Aside from "*.m3" models and "*.fxa" portraits, mostly everything is plaintext or in a known format(images/textures in dds format).
See http://code.google.com/p/vgce/source/browse/trunk/docs/Blizzard/Starcraft%20II/files.txt
.manifest = XML
Though, I'm not sure .gfx is SWF since I couldn't open it with either a flash editor nor an image editor either.

Models are most likely in a custom format/conversion optimized for SC since they didn't open in max, maya, skp, kerkythea :P If blizzard doesn't provide a converter in the editor someone will most likely have to figure it out.

.dds seems to be the default UI graphics for everything, I find it weird how only the authorization ones are .gfx
.dds files are also used to texture models too, all of the models will have a diffuse map and a "normal" map. I thought blizzard would be doing multi-layer texturing on the models i.e. one layer is the diffuse, one layer is the bump and so on (files would have been .tga for this) I guess having both textures separate makes it even easier to mod. You can just change the texture to something else and get a different "unit" (completely change the look of the model) but not really modifying the model, so you save having to animate the model and such.

Also, the UIs work pretty much the same way the old ones did. One image as background, and multiple images over it, only this time the position of the objects are controlled by XML files and not .bins.

I think there's going to be less need for modding tools developing the way I see things right now.
Now we need a SC2 modding forum :P

fuck you all

SDE, BWAPI owner, hacker.

The GFX files are modified SWF files. People have already been able to decompile and recompile them.
See http://darkblizz.org/wiki/doku.php for the latest developments.

On a side note, I'm received some replay files, and made some progress on the format, but it's not enough.
I'll need a replay that sends a single command (select) saved to really break the ice on its format.

As for maps, those with keys who have played games, please search your entire computer for "*.SC2map".
