Quote from Hug A Zergling
A headless man had a letter to write;

It was read by a man who had lost his sight.

The dumb repeated it word for word;

And deaf was he who listened and heard.

What was the letter?
Oh, thanks for fixing it.

The letter is O, or zero in this case, because headless men have nothing to write.
zero = nothing

Blind can read nothing.
Dumb can repeat nothing.
Deaf can listen to nothing.

It's a bit rough, but I'm pretty sure I've gotten it.

A man is 27 years old. Every year he celebrates his birthday on it's date, with fun on the beach and a BBQ. This year, it coincided with the summer solstice. His birthday is December 21. How is this so?

Here's a good one that some of you might recognize:

A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid.

What is it?

I need to think of one that's not Googlable.

Use books on math, logical puzzles and other such things if you have any.

An overly simple riddle: as the host of a party with seven guests, you are forced to split a circular cake eight ways. The catch: all of the pieces must be of equal size, and only three incisions may be made. How do you cut the cake?

do the cuts have to be straight?

Jun 22 2009, 8:28 pm ForTheSwarm Post #92

Two cuts that create two 45 degree angles and two 90 degree angles, then one cut that splits the two 90 degree angles into 45 degree ones.

One down the center, one perpendicular to that cut (pretty standard looking cuts straight down through the cake): now you have 4 pieces. Third: a horizontal cut through the center of the cake, and you have 8

That's not equal though.

Or maybe I'm just confused. Draw it?

First guest gets 1/4 of the cake. He cuts the cake (or eats half), and passes on to the second guest. (Shh, they're related).
Third guest gets 2/4 of the cake. He cuts the cake (or eats a quarter), and passes on the to fourth guest, who eats/cuts a quarter, who passes to the fifth guest who eats/cuts a quarter, who passes to the sixth guest who eats/cuts a quarter. (They're also related). :P
Seventh guest gets 1/4 of the cake. He cuts the cake (or eats half), and passes on to you, because it's polite that way. :D

Winnnnnn.

Those are the 3 cuts, the cake is in green.

And Vi3t, your solution doesn't work, that's like a dozen cuts, Jamal's riddle limits it to three.

And FTS:
Quote from ForTheSwarm
Two cuts that create two 45 degree angles and two 90 degree angles, then one cut that splits the two 90 degree angles into 45 degree ones.
You can't make two cuts that create two 45 degree and 2 90 degree angles since 45+45+90+90 = 270, and there are 360 degrees in a circle.

2 cuts could make 4 90 degree, or 2 45's and 2 135's, but the 3rd cut through the 135's would yield two pieces whose angles are 67.5 degrees, and hence larger than the other pieces and your solution also didnt work because it only produced 6 pieces.

Oh, and there's a catch to the riddle too: 4 people get better slices than the other 4 because you don't put icing on the bottom of a cake, only the top and outsides :D
