hello. i have starcraft japanese version which is very obscure and has never been updated with a patch but it still does connect to battle.net with the SC JAPAN chat icon. I also have broodwar the US version. I want to change my broodwar us version into the language of SC JAPAN. i tried to extract the stat_txt.tbl from the stardat.mpq of the japanese version, and then put it into the us version's patch mpq. when I do this and I import the stat_txt.tbl's locale as "neutral" it modifies the starcraft language, but everything is in jibberish, because its east asian characters. So i thought if I import its locale as "japanese" it would work. but when I do this the us version by default only uses the stat_txt.tbl file that is set to neutral...
i want to know how to make the game use another locale other than neutral by default.\\
thank you

Hmm. Switching .fnt files may work... How many characters are in the japanese version's font? If 255 is the highest then it should work.

i tried taking all the font files out of the font folder in the japanese version's stardat.mpq and putting them in starcrafts patch_rt.mpq font folder but it still doesnt work.
And I dont know how many characters are in the japanese version but I think its over 255.

Hmm. The font specs I have use a byte for the high index... Unless the japanese version uses something else, I have no idea.

hmm, i think it could have something to do with the .loc files, try replacing them with your japanese version files.
Btw, do you have japanese broodwar, too?
If yes, could you give me the unit sounds?
where are the loc files located?
and sorry i do not have japanese broodwar, just SCJP.
None.
I mean the files like SEditENU.loc or the Local.dll, they are just next to starcraft.exe
I believe i have heard something regarding these files and and the text language...
Dammit, I also only have the SCJP, this leaves the japanese unit sounds incomplete... (I kinda collect unit sounds^^)
SCJP doesnt come with a SEditENU.loc or any Staredit loc files
and i've tried replacing editlocal.dll and local.dll, but no luck..
what is weird is how i can replace the stat_list.txt with another language like french and everything works fine, but it wont work with japanese..
OK so i got it to work. sort of. I reinstalled starcraft. and just install starcraft not broodwar.( i did not patch anything, both are version 1.00) then i replaced Starcraft english version's stardat.mpq and starcraft.mpq with SCJPs stardat.mpq and starcraft.mpq, and then I put StarcraftJ.exe from the SCJP's folder into Starcraft english's folder to start up Starcraft english (instead of Starcraft.exe) and it sucessfully changed the language. The only problem is, StarcraftJ.exe requires the old arr/mapdata.dat and images.dat etc to run, if you update with the latest patch and try running starcraft with starcraftj.exe. , it will not run, you get this message:
Starcraft was unable to open a required file. If the problem persists, try uninstalling the reinstalling Starcraft using the program SETUP.exe on the Starcraft CD ROM. The problem occured when trying to load a file: arr\mapdata.dat. The program issued a command but the command length is incorrect.
Also i assume somehow if you got passed that you would need SCJPs storm.dll too, which won't work online either......damn.

Praecipitator i also heard that Japanese broodwar does not exist, so the sounds wouldn't either.
