1. Whatcha think of the game?
2. Do you play it now?

My girlfriend got the game like 2 weeks ago. It's decent, I suppose, though I don't have too much mmorpg experience. They could have done so very much more with it, looking at it from a diablo 2 stand point (pretty much the last rpg I played online). Armor shouldn't max out at 60 and so damn early. It makes buying expensive armor worthless from a practical point. More variety of weapons w/ weapon names not having the same qualities ("short sword" can be weak as hell with damage 1-4, or can have the maximum damage for a sword... though I suppose that gives bigger variety in weapon looks for your character). More weapon and armor customization. Different monsters. I hate the fact the characters on the same account share the same stash and guild (we have to split the incredibly small storage chest space).
Actually, I suppose I hate a lot about the game. Although I do play occasionally.

Good things: You can dye most items with a variety of dyes and mix dyes for more colors. No subscription fee. Erm... eh... Collecting crap is always fun?

But anyways, sometimes I just leave my character dancing in a trade hub of Nightfall. So if you message me, I may or may not see it. Main character = Elemental Purity. I might start a new one for triple xp weekend just for fun.
Things to know: The squeaky wheel gets the grease
Forums are DONE. Well, done as in I'm leaving the area to do other things.
LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS. After awhile, I'll generally leave the area alone and not do any work on it until I revisit.
Currently working on: DLDB tools for the DLDB managers. Probably the DLDB in general as well.
Next in line: Message center, Mod night, Wiki

I really disliked Guild Wars... I had bought it because a few of my friends are obsessive over it and I was interested in the whole "no subscription fee" aspect.

I guess part of my dislike stems from the fact that I'm naturally biased towards sci-fi or modern games, especially in MMOs. But I think my main problem with it was the limited interaction between players. I mean, yes, you interact with players in cities and arena matches, but when you go out into the world, you're in your own instance of that area, with no one else around (apart from those in your party).

Maybe my opinions are a little biased due to my EVE Online experiences, but for a game claiming to be an MMO, there seems to be very little "Massively Multiplayer" aspect to it.

Guild Wars has a few fundamental changes to the RPG concept that must be recognized to avoid comparing it to a traditional RPG and be left disappointed. You listed one very important one, armor. Guild Wars was designed first and foremost with PvP in mind. Contrast that with something like WoW, where Battlegrounds was added as an afterthought and balance issues run rampant. As a PvP-centric game, armor and weapons have a "perfect" value. For swords, the maximum damage range is 15-22, with an attack speed of 1.33sec. Instead of ever more powerful weapons, you can customize weapons with a prefix and suffix item. For a sword, those items are a Sword Hilt and Sword Pummel. These customizations also have perfect values, but it is the differences in choices that set players apart rather than hard numbers. You see, the intent of Guild Wars is not who has grinded better gear, but rather who uses the best strategy, and as such the perfect values ensure everyone is on equal footing.

In Singleplayer, you do have to find or earn those weapons and customization items (they are usually salvaged off of other weapons with the enchantment you want). You can use your SP character in PvP, or you can create a PvP-only character. This type of character gives you a menu of all armor, weapons, and customization items. Thus, gear is not intended to make you more powerful, but rather give you more strategic options.

The more expensive armor that do not give additional benefit are known as vanity armor. They simply look cool. You don't have to get it. That's one of the nice things about Guild Wars -- you don't have to look like a bag of skittles. Your look is up to you without worry of sacrificing stats. Some of the vanity armor is very difficult to get, so they act as a status symbol.

You mentioned dyeing, another fun feature. You can not only dye your armor, but also your weapons, shields, foci, even bags if you so choose.

The "stash" as you call it is actually the only way to share items among characters on the same account without a third party. As you become more familiar with the game, you'll probably find a lot of the stuff you've been trying to horde is actually somewhat useless and you'll know what you can sell or trash without worry. After that, you'll find you have plenty of space. Also, each Campaign adds an additional tab to your Xunlai chest. Heh, and if you think you don't have room now, I played back before they had the Crafting Material tab, so literally 70% of my box was taken up by twigs and cloth. =oP

Where Guild Wars can become addicting, at least for me, is in build creation. There are thousands of skills in the game, and you get to mix two professions of your choice together, lending a lot of creativity to your tactics. The designers fashioned the gameplay similar to card games like Magic: The Gathering, where you choose your deck and strategy beforehand. This is reflected in the game with the limitation to only 8 active abilities and being restricted to changing those abilities only in towns. But, while in a town, you can completely change your build, skills, attributes, everything, and all at no cost. This lends variety and flexibility to your characters. Not to mention you can even change out your secondary profession (for SP characters, this is earned later in the game).

^ Quality post.

Also, you mentioned the bank, I remember back in the day people would buy a second account just so they can store things on other characters as a bank (in some extreme cases, a third account).

No one to play with, though, so I don't do much anymore.

You can download the game. Once you made an account you don't need to know your key code anymore.

I play it now and then when I'm bored. Eve got the Nightfall expansion (and wants Faction). It becomes kinda boring when you don't know anyone there, so I deleted it to make room for Age of Conan some time ago. Oh, and I play on the European server thingy, so I suppose I can't play with most of you :(

I'm a little excited for Guild Wars 2 (it's free, so I'll give it a shot). For now, Age of Conan is... amazing.

Guild Wars - Pay 60 dollars every six months for new content.
Every other MMO - Pay 15 dollars every month for new content.

Guild wars is certainly cheaper, but it is certainly not free to play. Buying a new expansion every few months is nearly identical to the subscription model.

That is a flawed misrepresentation. To even continue playing at all in a normal MMO you must pay, regardless whether you're a high enough level to experience any of the "new content" they release. There is no choice in the matter. You pay to play.

With Guild Wars, I could play it right now at no cost. I still haven't beaten either Prophecies or Factions, so there is still plenty of "new" content I haven't experienced. I can take my time, play at my leisure. Great for people who work and have other commitments, as only playing a few hours a month isn't going to cost me $15 a pop. I don't have to buy Nightfall or Eye of the North to play what I already own. I get a choice. With that choice, I can judge the new content beforehand to determine if it's worth my money. If you didn't like the Fury of the Sunwell addition in World of Warcraft, tough, you paid for it automatically.

You're getting ripped off, all the chapters were released at $50. First chapter came 1 year after the release of Guild Wars not six months, second chapter came six months after the release of the first one, and the expansion came out one year later and only cost $40. There was also a bonus mission pack for $10 but if you bought the expansion during a 3-4 month period this was free.

Right now the original game only costs $30 and the first expansion is $40. But if you only play PvP then all you have to do is spend $50 to get an account and unlock all the skills across all chapters of the game.

The only thing from Guild Wars that is $60 is the platinum edition which is the original game ($30) and the expansion ($40).

You also forget to mention how much MMO's initially cost. WoW released at $50 (maybe $60? I doubt that high) and there was a $20 account setup fee. Two years later it was $50 for the expansion and this whole time you're still paying $15 a month. MMO developers also update their games less often than ArenaNet, who update their game sometimes twice a week (source).

Wow, first off Hercanic, thanks for giving GW justice. It's a very intelligent game. The core of every RPG is this:

1. Kill stupid enemies
2. Level up
3. Get better gear

I'm tired of this formula. And to be honest, GW does it too.

However, as Herc has said before, grinding and leveling has been reduced. Leveling maxes at 20. From this point, everyone is on the same page. As for gear, that too is standardized. Once you get the max gear, everything else is simply "luxury". A more expensive piece of armor will just look different, but will have the same stats as another piece. That cuts out my two biggest peeves with RPGs.

I thought it was just me, but Herc brings yet ANOTHER great point. Making a build in GW is like making a deck for the Magic the Gathering card game. In GW, changing a build is easy. Simply drag spells out and change your attribute points and it's a new build!

As such, GW does not reward time investment, but strategic organization of character builds. It truly shines in the PvP format.

My opinion on the PvE is otherwise however. The majority of quests are going to be:
- Go from point A to point B, kill annoying monsters along the way
- Kill guy at point B
- Collect X random objects

It's just not fun. Also joining a party can take a while because people simply might not be there or they might discriminate you on your class. But even though I speak negatively about PvE, it's just as bad or even worse in WoW.

I'm not really a PvE person though in ANY game. The only game where I enjoyed playing the computer was Pokemon the Trading Card Game for the gameboy color.

Oh and I got GW: Prophecies and GW: Eye of the North Platinum Pack for $40.

Oh and what do I think about the game? Well, I've put over 240 hours into this game. The PvE is getting to be stale. My joy only comes from making new builds. I'm trying PvP, but I'm overwhelmed at the number of builds to consider countering. My favorite class is the Assassin because he can deal huge amounts of damage in a small time period and he's easy to use. Despite what people say, I like the Factions campaign because you level up faster. The voice acting and story are a joke, but it's an RPG.

Do I still play? Yes. I have a guild too called [GATE].

Guild Wars is too easy for me... I have I think 5 role-playing charatcers and 2 for PvP and I own that game... I love ABing though. I can't wait for Guild Wars 2 to be released. But this it to IP. If you don't get all 3 of the Guild Wars games, then the game isn't as fun as it could be. You need all 3 to get the full nice experience out of it...
