I find it strange that no one has tried to replicate the city Terrain of SC2.
I mean since it's map modding it wont be a problem running it with a mod or a regular game.
First of all I do also need you to understand that I do not have any modding experience, just expressing myself a bit.
I suggest modding the badlands could be a good idea in an attempt to create the city Terrain like the one of SC2, some parts probably look like installation tilsets.

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

Which city terrain are you trying to recreate specifically? There have been tons of buildings and such created on the badlands tileset to create what could be considered cities, but the SC1 terrain is extremely limited in comparison.

Dafuq you whining about? Follow your heart and anything is possible with SC1.

There's also a good building example by Dizzy here, literally right below your post in the forums...

Those images on that link seem very nice, though I wonder how likely it is for people to be able to recreate SC2's City Terrain to a large degree?
Myself I still have all about Terrain to learn and everything I've seen on this page convinces me that it is possible.
Even recreating nearly every SC2 campaign map properly could be done very well to a large degree.
Has anyone here even tried to recreate a SC2 map combining tiles and tile sets to do it?

And by the way, do you guys have any good tutorials for how to start map editing?
I really loved the mountain and ramps I saw in some other threads at this place, it makes the map look so much more natural.
What program are you guys using to make these maps by the way, I bet that staredit is a bit limited, I found SCMDraft working with more advanced options too.

Yes, SCMDraft is the best map editor at the moment. You can find some terraining tutorials here: http://www.staredit.net/starcraft/Category:Terrain and at the old wiki here: http://www.staredit.net/topic/13129/

Do anyone have an idea on how to create a map like Devil's Playground in SC, the lower ground gets flooded by Lava each 5 minutes and I wonder how it would be possible to make?
When it does get flooded by the lava actually has to kill all units pretty fast, not directly but their hit points drops pretty fast

It isn't possible to make lava like there is in SCII, not without modding. You could sort of fake it using units to represent lava but it would be pretty crummy.

With modding of course, could there be some kind of lava flooding over lower ground?
With an alarm and sounds like in SC2 to be played at the proper time?
The lava flooding could be some kind of effect, that if possible could be like a psyonic storm covering all lower grounds, and even have a countdown to when it's getting dangerous and let it repeat every 5 minutes with sounds and all.
The graphical effect, I suggest would be that the entire lower ground would suddenly get a lava overlay, and then it would last a few secs, before going to normal.

You could have scarabs flood the lower ground when the time comes.

you could not even have an effect for lava and just tell the players "Lower ground is covered in lava" and then kill everything that goes into the appropriate location. That would be hilarious.

I thoight about that, I heard that SC cannot detect different levels of ground, seems like everything is in reality at the same level, just with different graphics, this makes me think that you have to tell SC which locations will dangerous.
I also heard that SC has a maximum number of things able to be present ingame, meaning that if there's too many units in the game every unit wont even be able to fire.
Scrab flooding seems good but they would have to be still and if there are too many I guess SC could crash.
I believe that every effect and every unit takes one space of what SC supports at max.

You should stop listening to whoever you heard this from, because they have no idea what they're talking about. This is something you'll learn in your first week of mapping, if not the first day.

When you open the Edit Location options (select location, press enter), there's a list of checked boxes which say "Low Ground, Med Ground, High Ground". These are the different levels of ground. Uncheck all the boxes except Low Ground and it will only affect the lowest level of terrain.

Also, make sure you're using the newest version of SCMDraft2. It's the same one provided here: http://www.staredit.net/topic/8307/

Still Napping

Location height detection was included with staredit, even.

How do you think Starcraft knew when to make shots miss when firing on a unit on high ground?

Jun 24 2012, 8:14 am Raygoza Post #15

Scarieur, that's right but, modders have a hard time making units themselves to know that they are on lower Terrain, it's one of the problems to why they never succeeded in recreating the reaper or the Colossus, because they cannot get the units to detect terrain, nor even detect if they are on top of creep.
I'm not the modder, but I know a few and they are all having these problems.

Can't you use burning cloaked buildings for rising lava, hell even gradually reduce their hitpoints for a smoother effect.

Theres 2 ways i can think of...

1. To create a location for your lava areas and set a trigger to create units at the time that you want lava to be present and kill them right as theyre created. For example...

Lava comes at 10 minutes, disappears at 10 min 30 sec.

Create Some mutas at your lava location and kill them instantly from 10 mins to 10 min 30 seconds. Muta deaths will create a red splash which could look like lava. Also during this time you would make it so that if anyone walks in those lava areas they immediatly die.

The only problem with this method is that it will for sure lag your game while the units are constantly created and killed.

2. You can create a bunch of bunkers for example set their health to an amount that theyre on fire and disable doodad state for them so that all you can see is the fire.

First of all, I like the SC2 Lava much more, because SC1 Lava seems like it's already hardening and you don't see very much heat.
What I mean is that lava in SC2 looks like it just poured out, it has a lot more yellow-orange color and probably only has those colors.
I need to know how I remake SC2 Lava tiles to SC lava tiles and then I'll probably have to work with editing every tile that has the old lava and replace those parts with the new lava.
After, anyway after this what would be needed is to make the whole lower ground to change to the lava tile or having something like an overlay of lava that covers the whole lower ground.
To add to this would be a fast hit point drop which I'm still not sure on how to make.

Edit: Another question that risis with my previous, how do you add new dooads or replace already existing tiles with new ones or getting them edited.
Not just editing them but also, how do you open the program and get the lava look?
I mean, after getting the edited tiles, how do I open SCMdraft and being able to play around with them?
I don't know if I'll be able to do the tile editing myself, but to get a good image I suggest either converting SC2 lava tiles to SC tiles or taking a print screen when the ground floods over with lava on Devil's playground mission in an area where the one of the larger low ground areas get flooded by lava.

All I'm asking for is that someone makes modded Lava tiles, I could make the edits to edges and such stuff that are in direct contact with the lava once the lava tiles themselves are done.
Also as I said earlier, I need to know, how to get the modded files in SCMDraft and in game.
I know using a mod works but how does it work when you mod a map itself?

You can't do that in SC1. If you could you would have seen effects like that by now. You're going to have to learn how to work within SC1's limited parameters.

Eh, still with modding you could do all kinds of stuff, like replace a flying unit's sprite with a "lava plane" then making that unit move up for rising lava.
