Is detecting sarcasm on the internet some god-given talent that only a select few of us possess?

None.

Sarcasm is Aristocrat.

Yeah I'm with Rantent on this one, nobody uses sarcasm on the internet without adding an ironic smilie face :-_-:

If a person isn't obvious about it, you're either bad at recognizing sarcasm, or the other person is bad at using it.

Sarcasm is never used on the internet, that's why you're unable to detect it.

Just here for the pie

Someone should invent a sarcasm detection engine. That would be a great idea!

What's sarcasm?

Quote from Dictionary.com (I think)
1.
harsh or bitter derision or verbal irony.
2.
a sharply ironical taunt; sneering or cutting remark: a review full of sarcasms.

Find Me On Discord (Brood War UMS Community & Staredit Network)

Have you ever heard someone be sarcastic in RL? There is always a very specific tone of voice used. You cannot transmit tone through words. Instead, you have to rely on context, and most people do not do this.

I think when sarcasm 'flies over someones heads', its the fault of the person being sarcastic, not the listener. Because sarcasm is really just lying. You are saying something but you mean the exact opposite. Most people's default position is to trust.

Yeah, that's a smart analysis. Way to go, genius.

I do somewhat agree, though. :)

True masters of sarcasm don't use a specific tone of voice. Similarly, only amateurs use sarcasm that is "the exact opposite" of what they mean.

Sarcasm is the basest form of humour.

Red classic.

"In short, their absurdities are so extreme that it is painful even to quote them."
