Week #1 SEN Mapping Contest

All submissions are due April 28th, 2010, by 11:59:59PM EST

Introduction
This is the first of a series bi-weekly mapping contests to be held at SEN! Don't miss out! For this specific contest there is no material reward, although future contests may or may not hand out rewards. However, bragging rights will be a major factor in participating in these contests; a score board for rankings will be kept in each contest's original post displaying previous top three placers. Now is a perfect chance to get your name into this list!

Specifications
  • All maps will be judged by a handful of pre-determined judges based on a set criteria.
  • The maps to be submit must adhere to the prescribed theme.
  • There is no specification for an amount of players.
  • Mapping teams are not allowed.
  • Mod supplements are not allowed. Although maps with mods can be submit for fun, they will not be judged (this includes Farty's EUD enabler).
  • Maps started previous to the starting of this contest are not allowed.
  • Only one map per participant may be submit in each contest.
  • Late maps may be submit, but are not guaranteed to be judged, and will not count towards the rankings.

Theme
The theme that each of the maps need to adhere to is: Puzzle

The theme is meant to be rather open ended, and also serves the purpose of making sure that maps started prior to the contest aren't submit. As long as the map's story or gameplay focuses on puzzles of some sort, in some way, you'll score full points for the Theme category.

Example Ideas for a Map:
  • A remake of the classic Tetris game.
  • A large maze where players race to find their way, where each player's progression through the maze affects the other players in some way.

Here are a few definitions of the word puzzle:
Quote from Google Define
  • perplex: be a mystery or bewildering to; "This beats me!"; "Got me--I don't know the answer!"; "a vexing problem"; "This question really stuck me"
  • a particularly baffling problem that is said to have a correct solution; "he loved to solve chessmate puzzles"; "that's a real puzzler"
    # be uncertain about; think about without fully understanding or being able to decide; "We puzzled over her sudden departure"
  • a game that tests your ingenuity

Judging Criteria
Gameplay: 10 points
  • Does the map keep the player's constant attention?
  • Is the map too hard, too easy?
  • Is the map actually fun?
Originality: 10 points
  • Was the entire idea copied from someone else? If so, did you shape the idea into something unique?
  • Is your map not just a Final Fantasy or AoS clone?
Aesthetics: 10 points
  • How shiny is your map? How polished?
  • Is your terrain blocky in places?
  • Do you have proper grammar?
Theme: 5 points
  • Does your map contain more than just a maze made with terrain walls?
  • Does your map include some sort of puzzles, or solvable events of some sort?
  • Do you incorporate baffling and challenging problems in a meaningful and relevant way?
Completion: 5 points
  • Are there major bugs?
  • Is the map complete?
  • Do you use the entire map's space?

Judges
  • Loveless
  • CecilSunkure

Let me show you how to hump without making love.

If you needed a banner, you could have just asked dude. I'll start one up. You also forgot a [/list] in Gameplay.

Also, good luck to the participants.

Devourer, you remember you were supposed to create a script for the contest? Mostly the 4 hours one, but the bi-weekly one could be coded too. It'd be fun! =)
I'll try to make a map for this, but I'm not sure of what it'll be! ^^

There are some limits. Other than that, no. New rules might be added on if necessary, but I doubt any will.

Why can groups not sign up?

Also: Lol I edited the post before you could quote and post your "limits" list. I skimmed it and SOMEHOW missed that on the first go.

Well in all honesty, how many team maps ever get completed? We decided that since it is a short time frame and that we will be incorporating a personal scoreboard, that it would be simpler to remove group mapping.

Also, if everyone makes their own map, then more maps are made overall. Forgot to mention that ;)

The sword and the faith

I'm working on something but it probably won't get finished. Also, its not so much puzzle as puzzle/adventure but we'll see how it turns out. GL to all other participants.

Consider this rating scheme:
-Permise (ideas/concepts begind the map) 1/3
-Execution (terrain, triggers, aesthetics) 1/3
-Gaming value (fun, replayability, teamwork, etc.) 1/3

I got an idea, but I'm not sure if it's possible to make yet... Let's see what happens with it.

The sword and the faith

The first few Resident Evil games had some amazing puzzle aspects. RE3 water sample puzzle anyone? Shit was fucking annoying.

I've never attempted a puzzle map before, but you can count me in this contest.

Yeah a detective map would definitely qualify. There are some definitions of the word puzzle in the OP, and that should qualify if you do a good job.
