#2 seems like the most interesting to me, assuming you can work all the fancy physics-y stuff into a good basic gameplay dynamic and manage the high trigger complexity without lag. Your typical battle.netters probably won't be able to play it, but why care? It's not as if they have what it takes to be decent opponents anyway.

#1 might be entertaining for a little while, but as with any player vs computer map, once you beat it, there's not much point in playing it any more. Besides, what with the year-long contest and all, we've already got far more RPGs than the rather limited gameplay typical to the genre can really justify. It's still a better idea than a movie map, to be sure, but not that interesting overall.

Let me show you how to hump without making love.

None of the above.

My suggestion: AstroGears 3.0

SDE, BWAPI owner, hacker.

Movie maps in Starcraft are done because it's Starcraft. Can you surpass the limits of Starcraft and awe your audience? It's not about watching the movie, it's about watching the creator's efforts. You can't do a Starcraft movie map if it's not in Starcraft.

They're all good concepts(from the OP), I couldn't choose.

Idea #1. I always wanted to do something along those lines, but I knew I could never handle something that epic. I know you work alone, but if would gladly help work on it with you. I know you wouldn't need it, but it would be like a dad letting his son hand him the tools while he works on the motor.

If you make a movie map it MUST be a 100% faithful adaptation of DOOM: Repercussions of Evil.

Have you done any other movie maps? If not, I'd say to do that, because everyone on SEN is making a big open RPG at the moment and you've already done Astrogears in re: #2.

I could do a lot to eliminate lag this time around, but yeah Starcraft really can only take so much. But I simply won't make any more maps that don't at least try to be accessible for bnetters. I have a very good reason why.

Well a lot of people continue playing Left 4 Dead after they beat it, right? That's why I'm aiming to make it a procedurally-generated game world in an open RPG(-ish) setting. Otherwise, without the replay value, I might as well just make a movie map (like I'm considering). :P

Exactly. To even be seriously attempting to use Starcraft to make anything falls into the "because I fucking feel like it" category, for the most part. By rights I should be using a more modern game engine to mod with. Or coding this stuff into their own games instead.
Which isn't a terrible idea either, now that it crosses my mind again...

Also there's no reason a movie couldn't be a technical achievement itself. Just not a gameplay one.

I actually like the idea of a massive movie map, simply because it hasn't been done, and in reality, it could actually be the hardest job of the three. (Unless its like random text and things moving about and OMG surprise crash ending! )

That's where I put my vote.
A&O the movie, in 3D! in STARCRAFT!

Even though I think the not-so-Open RPG idea is more fun, it'd fit your style more by creating Space Dogs.

Oh, and I still wanna test Mafia when I come back :D

Why not do all 3 in one?

Sin Dogs Saga

The idea here is simple: It's a massive Open RPG-ish map that involves, you guessed it, ships n' space n' shit! rest assured of an epic tale of high adventure, drama, action, and storytelling. it won't have any pre-established story or plot to make note of nor any loving cast of androgynous Japanese whiny soccer-playing teenagers to worry about. This will probably be by far the most technologically advanced map I'd ever try to manage within Starcraft's constraints with the serious intent of making something worth playing. Instead, I'll try to actually not fuck around and make it somewhat serious (however tempting surprise crash endings may be),

Do I decide on a map to best fit my style? Or do I best fit my style to do a map I decide?

Ehh.. Open RPGs always suck, I've never seen a good one and probably never will, I know Tux is an epic map maker though. I put my vote on #3! The trailer map was so awesome, I wanted to play it so bad D:! But I guess since it's not happening, a movie of it would be the best second thing to do. Make the movie! I really look forward to seeing it if you do decide on #3 :D

Open RPG are fun... but get pointless after a while ;).
A&O PLEASE! ;)

I think you've already decided on which map best fits your style. Whether you decide to do the map that best fits your style is your own decision. Maybe you wish to change the style that best fits you and challenge yourself.

... :P

To elaborate, I feel that creating all those orbital systems and complicated space systems is just your thing... Not that you can't create a grand RPG, but I think the Space Dog thing has a better chance of sustaining your attention... Not that you can't focus on a map for indefinate periods of time.
BTW, FYI, a movie map = bad idea ... Not that you can't create a good one, but it's a waste of time and talent :C .. Not that you may feel the same way.

Definitely Space Dogs, or preferably a different pvp map. RPGs are long and boring and aren't really worth it, and movie maps are better done outside starcraft.

If you make a pvp map, make sure it's fast-paced.
