First thing's first:

If you are in the DEMO phase of creating an RPG, let me know and we can have a race!
Also, play my demo =).

Bonded By Blood
(Bonded by Blood) an RPG.

Introductory Story

Orphan leaves the care of his Master at the dojo to follow rumors that tell of his Father still being alive. His search brings him to a mysterious island a few miles off the coast of Japan. During his time on the island, he gets caught up in the action between a village of magi and an egotistical human who can't satisfy his thirst for power.

^ This is the basic plot, but this RPG also carries a side story involving a man's journey to find his family and some pretty twisted discoveries along the way.

Specifications

Map can be either 1 OR 2 players. It is designed to have dynamic difficulty so both 1 and 2 player mode is equally challenging.
Map is 128x128192x192, but the actual area of play is made up of sixty seventy eight-eight 12X20 screens + 1 Menu screen per player. (Menu screens total) (90 screens total)
Expected Duration: The main quest should take between 2-5 hours to complete, but it's way too early to tell any closer estimates. There will also be side-quests (currently two are planned for sure), but definitely more as I develop the flesh of the map.

Specifics =)

Okay. I'm trying a new approach to the standard character development type deal, so bear with me.

1. Weapon of Choice
As the game progresses, choose one of two sacred swords: Avenger and Defender. Each one has it's own strength and weaknesses as far as how your character is played. Either weapon has 3 slots where stones can be inserted in order to gain abilities. Unfortunately, you start with wooden sword which sucks in the way that it only has 1 slot to insert stones.

Weapons

1. Wooden Sword - [1 slot: Abilities Only] Low damage, Average defensive capabilities. (Default Weapon)
2. Avenger - [3 slots: All Skills Available] High damage, Average defensive capabilities.
3. Defender - [3 slots: All Skills Available] Average damage, High defensive capabilities.

2. XXXX Stone(s)
You gain abilities by inserting stones into the slots in your weapon. There are 5 different types of stones, and 3 different slots in which to insert them. This leaves players with a total of 15 unique spells to use from different categories: Ability, Offense, Support. You can only have 1 of each type of ability active at a time and you can switch your abilities at any point (Given the menu is available).

3. Growth
As you use a stone inserted in your weapon, it gets growth - that is "EXP for stones". Your proficiency with using each type of stone goes up over time, so spells become stronger and the more you use a certain stone, the better it becomes. Stone EXP does not reset or decrease if you remove all stones of that type, so don't worry - it's fine to switch your stones around and experiment.

Stones & Spells

1. Null Stone [Level = Any, Non Elemental]

A: Bright Eyes - See Hidden Things / Prevent Blindness. (+duration/lvl)
O: Blade Dance - Non-Elemental Damage. Hits Ground. Small Range. (+damage/lvl)
S: Parry - Avoid damage AND spells. (+duration/lvl)

2. Flame Stone [Level = Any, Fire Elemental]

A: Melt Ice - Melt Ice (like if it was blocking a door or something)
O: Flame Aura - Fire-Elemental Damage. Hits Ground. Medium Range.
S: Warmth - Faster MP Regen, +5% EXP gain.

3. Bolt Stone [Level = 2+, Lightning Elemental]

A: Teleport - Move to designated location "x"
O: Bolt - Light-Elemental Damage. Hits Ground + Air. Medium Range.
S: Static Field - Prevents the use of spells.

4. Wind Stone [Level = 5+, Wind Elemental]

A: Float - Steps are Light. (Useful to avoid setting off traps, enemy detection by footsteps)
O: Tornado - Wind-Elemental Damage. Hits Ground + Air. Medium Range.
S: Vortex - Spell that sucks in enemies. (Not bosses)

5. Aqua Stone [Level = 6+, Water Elemental]

A: Invis - Become invisible.
O: Rain - Water-Elemental Damage. Hits Ground. Large.
S: Bubble - Increases defensive capabilities.

** The reason that elements are important is because some enemies (especially bosses) can be immune to a certain element.

4. Tradition
You can level up your character to a maximum of level 10. Level is not very important in this game, but you get some handy stuff like Stat Points, increased Magic power, and meet requirements to use stones by leveling up. I purposely designed levels like this to discourage grinding because grinding is lame.

5. Armor
You can find or buy armor on this island to equip on your guy. This improves defense by the trusty method of shield regens. Some armors have special effects, but most don't. This means that you might have to pick between pretty good defense + special or excellent defense. You can carry up to (I think it's 9) armors at a time, so you can always switch to the one you're in the mood for. Excess armor can be sold at the shop for a decent amount of gold.

6. Status effects
This game features a lot of status effects: Slow, Stun, Silence, Bubble, Blind, Float, Invisibility and probably more as I work out the details.

7. Collectibles
You will have a much easier time completing this game if you take the time to look for things to pick up. Laying on the ground, you will find a decent variety of items. Some may be in plain view (not necessarily reachable though) and some may be hidden quiet well, or require you to overcome an obstacle to access. Every time you pick up an item, your Treasure Hunter rank gains some credibility. There may or may not be someone who gives the best Treasure Hunter a reward...

These things also play into the double-edges sword of playing 1P vs 2P. In one player, sure it's a bit tougher to bet through the obstacles by yourself, but you are rewarded by entitlement to all collectible items. In 2 player mode, you have to share these with your partner so that adds a bit of complication and teamwork to it.

8. Sides Quests + Mini Games
Monster Arena,
Gambling,
Treasure Hunter Rank,
Optional Super Boss =),
Hidden Items (Ultimate Armors of Sexy Pwnage)

9. Beastiary

I. Feral Wolf
Rec = 0, EXP = 50 (52)
Rare Drop = Chest Plate 3%

II. Land Wyrm
Rec = 1, EXP = 100 (105)
Rare Drop = Chest Plate 8%

III.

Obligatory Screen Shot(s)

[Menu Screen.]

[I like this cliff.]

[This is what a typical dungeon looks like on the inside. Note the Null Stone on the platform above me, I like to place items just out of reach to drive players insane pondering how to get them.]

Closing Note:

=). I really want someone to race me. Currently, this map is ~7-8% done, so if you are around the same point for your RPG, let's race. I have attached the full DEMO to a post on the third page. Thanks! Cya.

OH! And in case anyone was curious: This is a Prequel to Hero Sanctuary.

Well, since you started one, now you're obligated to make an RPG for every single character in Hero Sanctuary or else you shall be cast from this universe in shame.

I'll race you. Don't expect much, though: I've found that in SC I need to stick to small projects or I get de-motivated and stop.

Oh, my RPG will have an IT as the hero. :P At least, maybe it will. I'm not sure.

Awesome, I've always wondered how the Ninja came into being...

Oohhhh shit lol. Well, this RPG is the back story of SAMURAI (unofficial, but my take on it). I dunno about any additional characters, but this is the one that I'm giving people.

Also, @TZ don't offer to race if you don't think you'll make it to the finish line, i need someone who gets shit done like I do to motivate me w/ competition.

If nothing else, I'll finish it just so I can say "I MADE AN IT HERO". :P

OH! And to anyone who didn't see it: Here is the preview for my map's interface: http://www.staredit.net/topic/9623/0/ The preview is attached to a post of mine on the bottom of the first page.

The sword and the faith

No offense Norm but based on HS I don't think your terraining is going to cut it. Enlist some help to make the map epic.

Edit: The SB thought I was calling you out, so I'd like to clarify:
I only said it because I'd like Norm to make the best map he possibly can. There are worse things than working with a talented terrainer and we have plenty.

Come on guys, stop spamming the topic so much.

Anyway, today I have been designing my first 4-room dungeon and first boss fight of the game.

In the DEMO, I will include gameplay slightly past the first boss. Expect this out end of January.

I feel like this uses some of the aspects from the rushed-up backstory i made for samurai :D.

So the stone system is gonna be similar to the gem system of Diablo II, except they level up?

The stone system is most closely related to the Materia system from FF7, also thought I said it before but this RPG is my personal take on the samurai's backstory.

Haha, Yeah Right. All I can say is that there is going to be some moderately extended terrain in places on the world map, but the dungeons are being done in square terrain as inspired from maps like Temple Puzzle.

Just here for the pie

Reminds me of the classic NES Zelda games, but with a different interface and level ups. I'd like to see you actually finish a by-definition RPG for once :P.

Well, once I complete the DEMO, I'll get some feedback and if people are interested in seeing the entire thing, I'll go from there.
