I just now looked it up and this is actually the type of solution that Wikipedia and every other site uses. I have no fucking idea how cheeze does it.

My answer only leaves one death as well (AT MOST). I read the exact same site that discussed odd and even groups. They usually discuss small groups where people can pass (our riddle never said they could pass) or everyone could answer at the same time.

The person in the back of the line counts the number of black hats. If he sees an even number of black hats, he says 'White'. If he sees an odd number of hats, he says 'Black' (or the other way around, or with white hats, it all works the same). The first person has a 50/50 chance of living.
The next person can then determine their hat by counting the number of black hats. If the back person said 'White', he knows there are an even number of black hats. If he sees an odd number, he knows he is wearing a black hat.
The next person, having heard that person say black, knows that there are now an odd number of black hats. The pattern continues, and you should be able to follow it from there.

Lulz. My answer had to do with xors and shit. It does the same thing as even and odd I'm fairly certain.
(It goes like this, assign black as 1 and white as 0; then the first person xors everything. His answer is the solution to the equation. The next person can then xor all the guys in front and himself and have that equal the first guy's answer. The next guy then xors everything in front with himself with the person behind so it equals the first guy's answer. This goes on until the last guy. Etc)

What should you ask in order to be certain that you will open the door with the gold behind it, instead of the hungry lion?
Ask "Would you kindly open that door over there?" When he opens the door, if it's the gold/money, you take the gold/money. If it's the lion, the knight kills it and you go open the other door.

The answer is "Yes", if you asked the guy infront of the lion door (nomatter if Knight or Knave).
