Grand Moderator of the Games Forum

I read this article yesterday and although I definitely can agree on some of the games they've included in the list, I think some of the other levels from those games are better. So what do you think are some of the most memorable levels/areas/zones in video game history (not necessarily limited to FPS games)?

Some of my favourites:

Half Life 2: Water Hazard
The bit where you're driving the airboat. I've replayed this chapter so many times and I especially love the fight at the dam in the end, where the hunter chopper just keep dropping loads of bombs on you. Whenever I get close to that part, I turn up the bass and enjoy the rumbling ;D

Borderlands 2 - Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Chaos: The Forge
The music in this area is made of win on its own. Combined with a massive killing spree playing as Gaige, it became one of my favourite areas ever.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl: Pripyat
The Stalker games have a lot of very atmospheric locations, but the one that stands out the most to me is Pripyat in the first game. It's just so bleak, depressive and lethal. I love it!

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: Kagrenzel
This place is somewhat awesome. If you haven't been there, go there. Don't spoil it by looking it up, just go. Here's a map.

Half Life: Gonarch's Lair
This is to me the most iconic location in the original Half Life, probably because that's how far into the game my cousin was the first time I saw it.

Midtown Madness: Chicago
Didn't see that one coming, did you? =P One of my friends had this game and I used to visit him after school almost every day to play this game. I eventually got it myself and spent many many hours driving around the streets of Chicago in my red Cadillac Eldorado.

World of Warcraft: Un'Goro Crater
When I first started playing WoW shortly after the European release, I quickly got sidetracked from the leveling process by all the unexplored zones in the game, the most memorable being Un'Goro with its many elite dinosaurs and colourful crystals. However, it wasn't a very friendly place when you where 30 levels below the mobs down there...

Minecraft: My first town
A long time ago one of my friends convinced me to buy this game and start playing on his server. I did and built a little house about 200 blocks away from his and his brother's castles. The day after everyone else had built their own house around mine and we had ourselves a little town. Good times!

I would probably agree that Modern Warfare 2 has some really memorable lines, scenes, and locations. Almost everyone knows the phrase: "50000 People used to live here... Now it's a ghost town ..." and location it goes with.

wth is starcraft

There's nothing specifically beautiful about it but I've always felt very nostalgic for the area outside of Ironforge in WoW, and the area that was outside of Menethil Harbor. I was really disappointed when they changed it - and more specifically when they changed the music. :(

I have no idea what to put here... So I guess I'll just put this here.

Spencer Mansion (REmake version) is the most memorable location to me. I basically know the layout, mainly by beating the game over twenty times. It's just too nice of a game to give up on.

Haven't played any of these games except Half-Life 1 and 2.

Blast pit, questionable ethics and unforeseen consequences are all definitely more defining than gonarch's lair. Surface tension and forget about Freeman are up there, too.

I hated the airboat levels in HL2, and again it would seem like ravenholme, highway 17 or the citadel would be more defining. Nova prospekt would also be a contender.

The link is about well designed fps levels, the topic about memorable game locations. I'll go with the latter and only include locations you are actually playing in - no cutscenes. No particular order:

Unreal 1, right after you exit the crashed ship you find a wide area with a waterfall. Laughable by today's standards it created an image of a beautiful planet in my head which still lingers today.

Tomb Raider (the Reboot), activating the radio tower. The scene is so immersive, that some friends of mine reported they felt a little vertigo during it.

Bonus points for emotions after correctly tuning the radio.

Borderlands 1, Moxxis Arena. While miss extravaganza is certainly a character I will never forget the actual location (arena) was nothing extraordinary. What really stuck was the music. You were already pumped by killing wave after wave in fast paced action and lots of close calls when suddenly the already driving music gets to its climax and pushes you even further. Check 4:06:

KILLING SPREE!!!!! ;)

Everything in Farcry 4. This caught me right from the first scene where you get a stunning look on a mountain side.

Several main missions in I still find myself stopping and just admiring the environment. And the animals with their fur simulation and tesselation effects on tree bark. And of course they look realistic from far away as well.

Fallout: New Vegas. Many places actually. But the atmosphere, also generated by background info, of Camp Seachlight stuck the most. Probably something about that healthy green glow. :)

Wolfenstein The New Order: I haven't played for more like 2 hours or so, but the beginning with the giant Nazi Tesla Robot stuck.

Speaking of Fallout, Fallout 3 had some pretty memorable locations: Vault 101, Megaton, the landscape when you first exit the vault.

One of the most memorable locations I've experienced was Springvale School in Fallout 3. It is also the creepiest, since I was in high school at the time and it felt weird to think about my school turning into that dark, gruesome dungeon.

Win by luck, lose by skill.

Conker's Bad Fur Day also had a very memorable part. The Poo Caverns. I think it's because of the boss there, that song is just too catchy. Also wasn't censored a lot, like the Live and Reloaded version, which had shit multiplayer in it.
All hail The Great Mighty Poo!
