Okay, well I finally got WIndows 7 to work, but I have no clue how to use it. I've got a couple of questions. ;o
1. How do I make the firefox icon on my taskbar not turn into the current firefox page when I open firefox?
2. Is there a way to move the "show desktop" button from the right of the taskbar to its original spot on the left?
3. I'm on the only account that's on this computer. How do I make that "You need admin permission" thing go away for every program I try to run?
4. I made my taskbar black, but the words are also black, so it creates a white glowy thing around the words so I can see them. It's pretty annoying, so is there a way for me to change the color of the words?
5. The icons on my desktop are pretty big. Can I make them smaller?
Yeah, these are all probably on google, but I just trust you guys so much more. <33 I'll probably have more questions later on.

I have the firefox icon on the taskbar (next to the start menu), and when I click on it, that turns into the window that I just opened. If I want to open a new firefox window again, I have to right click on my currently opened window and click on firefox from there. Quite annoying.
1. If you have a middle button (usually wheel button), you can also click that to open it.
2. Not sure if there is any way to move that. An alternative is to use the keyboard shortcut: Windows logo key + D
5. Right-click desktop
None.
1. play around with skins. you essentially want quick launch again right? Maybe google "restore windows 7 quicklaunch"? I suggest you give up on that and just use mouse gestures like everyone else.
2.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/1903553. don't do it. instead give yourself permission of the folders you want to write to. google disable UAC if you really want to, but it's not worth doing, as UAC is almost perfect.

Firefox - use google chrome.
Ctrl+T = new Tab (within chrome or firefox)
Windows Key + D = show desktop
Windows Key + E = new windows explorer window (like opening a folder)
Windows Key + L = Logout super quick fast style.
Start Menu + Search = your new best friend.
None.
Firefox - use google chrome.
boring. You don't even get to see my avatar animate.
There's also a number of other things which chrome simply will not do which firefox does, including render (poorly coded] sites correctly (like SEN before DJC fixed it). The same can be said for chrome, but the list is much smaller. I personally have chrome as my default browser, but almost exclusively use firefox, due to program integration. I still hate that I can't zoom images in chrome.

3. Are you the Administrator? If not, then A) fix that and B) you are really dumb, fo real.I think he's referring to the security permissions thing. I am an admin on my computer and even with security basically turned off, I still get that message all the time. I also get the "you don't have permission to create this file" message every now and then, but I just ignore it and replace the file with a new one.

UAC is microsoft's answer to root on linux, just poorly implemented. IMO windows should work the same way as linux does, and anything which fails to work properly gets a prompt that says to "enter you password" (and you must have a password on root) so it will work. The only real problem with it now is that it doesn't offer any physical security if you don't want to have a password, and windows does a poor job telling you what needs administrator rights to run/install stuff on.

Yay more hotkeys I didnt know about. Adding to the list now:
Windows Key + 1 through 9 = Pulls up the window in that position relative to the taskbar. For example lets say you have Winamp in the first pinned slot. Winkey + 1 opens it or pulls it up. Ctrl + Winkey + 1 minimizes it. And Shift + Winkey + 1 makes a new instance of it.
Winkey + Pause Break opens up your computer information, but this has worked forever, but still good general knowledge.

This is the error I was talking about when occasionally trying to save things while on the Admin account. All I did was download your sig 3 times and it showed up. I also got this error when trying to save the png, so that was awesome.
I get a separate one (referring to the User Account Controls) asking if I want to grant permission to whatever program triggered it, to make changes to the computer. Even with no security (the slider at "Never notify"), I get this message. Perhaps it's the same for you, Dem0n?

well it should be a simple fix. Give yourself and programs full control of the folder.
"Parliamentary inquiry, Mr. Chairman - do we have to call the Gentleman a gentleman if he's not one?"
I did that a while ago when I started to see the error, and it hasn't changed. It should be a simple fix, yes, but that isn't it. I think I'll eventually reformat my harddrive and start over anyway. I cluttered this one with crap I don't need, and like a fresh start every now and then.
Anyway this thread isn't really about my comp errors, I was just suggesting that perhaps they are what Dem0n was referring to.

Well I was talking about the UAC settings. It's not a big deal; it's just a bit of an annoyance having to approve things all the time.
Is there a way to change the task manager shortcut from ctrl + shift + esc to ctrl + alt + delete? I don't want to go to the screen and then choose it, and this hotkey is a lot easier to press since I've been doing it forever.

Actually I think there is. Just not a native one.
The task manager can be run by executing "%windir%\system32\taskmgr.exe" in Windows XP. I'm sure this can be done similarly in Windows 7.
Then there's several programs that allow you to assign hotkeys to launch programs. Personally I use the Trillian Automation feature for that purpose, but I'm sure there's also standalone programs for this.
Only Windows itself will see the ctrl-alt-delete hotkey, as far as I know. This is by design, partly so they can have a hotkey on the login screen that no other program can duplicate. There is a security feature that you can enable and is default on some versions of Windows that requires you to press ctrl-alt-delete to make the login screen come up. This feature is for protecting against someone spoofing the login screen to steal your password. This is default on at least the more recent server versions of Windows and possibly older ones, but you can also enable it on the non-server versions.

On Windows XP I can't set Ctrl + Alt + Del in Trillian. Maybe for Win7 this is different if they are using a different hotkey?
Also I guess that there exist key logger techniques to also recognize this key combination. At least you can detect the keys when pressed separately.
