Because they are traitors and with that emulate the mafia and their ways. Chuiu answered the other part. The traitors are given the mafia's identities at game start. If it were real life it would essentially mean they overheard the mafia and discovered their identities and now want to help them. But they couldn't work together immediately in games without pm'ing. They would have to establish some subliminal messaging for the traitor to reveal himself to the mafia. Farty tried it last game, but he died awful fast.

I'm having a discussion with the person running the game, so I'm going to go ahead and assume that Moose has no problem me talking, because I'm not affecting the gameplay in anyway.
That really is how it works though, the dead people just shouldn't say anything that will affect how the progress of the game going on at the time.
