TasssadarZeratul and ForTheSwarm present: FREESPACE 0
Well, basically, one day I was playing an obscure space-combat game called FreeSpace 2 and thought “Hey, this would be good as an SC mod!” And that’s how this project was born.
There are three races, the Terrans (humans
), the Vasudans (humanoid aliens), and Shivans (nonhumanoid aliens native to subspace). The mod takes place in space, but the units are actually ground, not air, so the terrain actually matters. The tech tree is fairly unusual: Rather than constructing buildings, you climb the tech tree by research. There are only two production buildings for each race (three for Terrans): Fighters, bombers, workers, and a few other units are built at your town center, while capital ships and cruisers are “built” (they actually warp in from subspace) at Jump Nodes (Refineries). The Terrans are the exception: They have a third structure which builds their cruiser-sized ships.
Anyway: Units!
Terran units
Fighters:
GTF Myrmidon: Space superiority fighter. Pretty powerful unit, but expensive. Terran's basic combat unit.
GTF Perseus: Very fast and has pretty good stats. Great against bombers, but weak against fighters due to low armor.
GTF Hercules Mark II: Heavy fighter. Has decent speed and good stats, but countered heavily by long-range attacks.
GTF Pegusus: Stealth fighter. Permenently cloaked but has retarded stats.
GTB Zeus: Light bomber. Can handle small numbers of fighters but best used against cruisers and larger.
GTB Boanergies: Heavy bomber. Crappy against fighters but devestating to cruisers and larger.
GTF Eyernies: Elite fighter. Not available until the endgame. Rapage to most units.
Cruisers: (Note that all cruisers and capital ships have a special attack called "Beam Cannons" that can only be used on large ships [cruisers/destroyers].)
GTC Fenris: Strike cruiser. Fast and has good attacks, but defensive stats aren't that good.
GTC Leviathan: Basically, a heavier, much slower Fenris.
GTC Aeoleous: A stronger strike cruiser with better stats. Not as powerful as the Leviathan, but almost as fast as a Fenris.
GTCv Deimos: Corvette. Powerful enough to take on destroyers if escorted by cruisers/bombers.
Destroyers: (Destroyers, as a rule, are pwnage. They also have beam cannons.)
GTD Orion: An older class of destroyer, and the weakest destroyer in-game. It is still very powerful, however. Orions can carry up to eight Myrmidon-class fighters (like how a Carrrier carries Interceptors) to supplement its own weapons.
GTD Hectate: Hectates have mostly replaced Orions as the Terran capital ship. They have over twice the firepower and better armor. However, they are not cheap. At all.
GTD Hades: The Hades-class can't be built. It is created by taking over a Shivan Demon-class destroyer (repurposed Infest spell).
Other:
GTFr Triton: Worker. Mines and builds stuff.
GTSc Faustus: Spellcaster. Casts Feedback, EMP, and Hallucination. Can also take over criticlly damaged Shivan Demon-class destroyers. Provides Supply.
GTA Charbydis: AWACS. Casts Scanner Sweep, Lockdown, and provides Detection. Can project a cloaking field (modified Siege Mode).
GTI Arcadia: Town center.
GTI Ganymede: Produces cruisers, as well as the GTSc Faustus and the GTA Charbydis. Carries out research/upgrades.
GVS Centaur: Casts Recharge Shields (all fighters have shields) and Repair.
GTSg Alastor: Sentry gun. Good early-game defense, but sucks once people start building bombers in large numbers.
GTT Argo: Support unit that creates Pharoses, Mjolnirs, and Meson Bombs.
GTNB Pharos: Modified Spider Mine. Immobile cloaked Detector. Argos carry three of these.
GTSg Mjolnir: Sentry gun. Has a beam cannon but nothing else. Must be manually fired.
Meson Bomb: It’s a bomb.
Must be manually ordered to detonate.
Vasudan Units
Fighters:
GTF Serapis: Basic fighter. Fast as fuck. Not that good against other fighters but very good against bombers.
GTF Seth: Heavy fighter. Slow but powerful.
GVF Phat: Stealth fighter. See Pegasus.
GVF Tauret: A faster version of the Seth with somewhat better stats. Uses a Reaver-style attack, but has a larger hangar space and is a lot more rapid-fire (and does a lot less damage).
GVB Bakha: Light bomber. Fast and pretty powerful against cruisers/capital ships.
GVB Sekhmet: Superspecialawesomesauce bomber. Very deadly, no real weaknesses except for high cost.
Cruisers:
GVC Aten: Main attacks and beam cannons are weak against large ships, but it can deal with fighters pretty well. Can ram enemy ships, destroying the Aten and dealing MASSIVE DAMAGE!!!1! to the target, probably destroying it.
GVC Mentu: Weak but fast and manuverable. Can use a StimPack-style ability.
GVCv Sobek: The Vasudan version of the Deimos. It has a long-ranged beam attack and is pretty fast, but it is slightly weaker than the Deimos.
Destroyers:
GVD Typhoon: An older class of destroyer. Mostly used for guard duty/defense, however if escorted well, it is quite deadly.
GVD Hatshepsut: The new Vasudan destroyer. Uses a Corrosive Acid (Devourer attack)-style attack as a spell in addition to normal beams.
Other:
GVI Alexandria: Town center.
GVFr Bes: Worker.
GVFr Satis: Worker, but with much better combat stats. Mostly used as a defensive unit: If your base gets hit, you can pull your Satises off mining and have them aid in defense.
GVT Isis: Can Repair damaged ships, board enemy ships (mind control), and has a powerful attack for a support unit.
GVA Setekh: AWACS. Provides Detection and casts Disruption Web and Ensnare.
GVSg Edjo: Sentry gun. Provides Detection and a (rather weak) attack. Weakest defensive structure.
GVS Nephthys: Support ship. Has a Medic-style healing ability that may only be used on fighters/bombers/other Nephthyses. Can also self-destruct, which is powerful but hard to use without blowing up your own units.
Shivan units
Fighters:
SF Manticore: Shivan's basic fighter. Pretty weak. Very fast and can use a StimPacks-style ability.
SF Basilisk: Heavy fighter. Slow as fuck and not that powerful, but fairly dangerous to large ships.
SF Dragon: Fighter-killer. Deadly primary weapons but limited anti-cruiser/anti-destroyer capabilities.
SF Mara: Would be considered a heavy fighter, but it's too fast for that designation. Deadly but expensive.
SB Taurvi: Weakest Shivan bomber. Has decent speed and combat power, but not worth it unless you can rush them.
SB Nahema: Uberbomber. No real weaknesses.
SB Nephilim: Heavy bomber. Ssssllllooowww.
SB Seraphim: Basically, a stronger version of the Nahema. A few of these can take out anything, especially with good micro. They have a very high supply cost, though.
Cruisers:
SC Rakshasa: Capital ship killer. Main weapons are very weak, but it has very powerful beam attacks.
SC Cain: Light cruiser. Like the Rakshasa, smaller ships are very effective against it.
SC Lilith: Similar to the Cain, but stronger. It can also cast Plague and Maelstrom.
SCv Moloch: Weak Corvette. Usefulness depends on when you can get them: They're great if you can build more of them faster than your opponents, but Deimoses and Sobeks shred them in anything approaching equal numbers, and the Moloch is somewhat expensive.
Destroyers:
SD Demon: Mostly useful in a base-defense role or when escorted by other ships. Fairly low speed.
SD Ravana: Primarily a fighter-killer. Best when mixed with Ravanas or Cains (or Liliths, but that is less cost-effective).
Other:
SFr Mephisto: Worker.
ST Azrael: Spellcaster. Casts Defensive Matrix and Dark Swarm. Also has AWACS (Detector) abilities.
SI Demongate: Town center.
Shivan CommNode: Basically a Pylon; Belials and Shivan-controlled Jump Nodes require CommNodes to function.
SSG Belial: Sentry gun; the strongest sentry in-game. Very dangerous.
SG Rahu: Spellcaster. Casts Psionic Storm and Irradiate. Can also use a Lurker-style attack as a spell.
Oh, you can look on the
FreeSpace Wiki for images of the units. (Except the Vasudan and Shivan town centers, which I made up because there are no canon units that would work as their town centers.)
(FTS, did I forget anything?)
