Ah, you see my friend, I am extremely tempted to share my music with you and spread my joy, however, I lack the necessary mic to record. In the end, I think I must admit to myself that the majority of this world will not always have the same opinion as me. I wish you the best in your future musical pursuits.

The term Best "mapper" is pretty broad and there can be all kinds of mappers. But my point is that personally I'd choose a MillenniumArmy over a Lethal_Illusion (if I were to vote for someone other than myself of course). I think someone that has created maps that people can say to friends, "Hey let's play X map" or "Go host a public game of X" is more fit for the title of Best Mapper.

I respect Lethal_Illusions skills as a mapper think he does probably the best work with new and complex trigger systems, but he still hasn't made many, if any, completed maps that I would consider fun. I may show FRAGs to someone who has never seen it before so they can go "omg wtf this is so cool" but it's not the kind of map you would play over and over again for fun. I'm sure he's been working on something that's meant to be played and has actual gameplay value, but the fact is there's nothing completed yet. I see his work as more valuable conceptually.

However, I'd say in terms of just pure triggering, a Lethal type person would have contributed more to the community than a MillenniumArmy type person because of the way Lethal has done complex things no one has done. Although one could say that Mill's triggering is more accessible and easier to comprehend to the general mapmaker. A mapmaker just starting out would have an easier time replicating something Mill has done than something Lethal has done. Of course this also depends upon the type of person since some people can easily grasp those kinds of technical things. I guess the issue boils down to whether you prefer someone who has done amazing conceptual work scattered across various incomplete concept maps but hasn't really applied any to a single complete map that people can play versus someone that has taken simpler and more well known concepts but has applied them in original ways to create maps that people enjoy playing. When considering who should be called the best mapper you have to first think about what aspects of mapping you value the most.

I'd also like to recognize that azala is another worthy nominee that I'd put in the Mill-type category. His April defense is another of his maps that has gained popularity on battle.net.

But ultimately you don't have to choose between those two types of mappers and prefer one over the other because I am the best of both worlds and my poker map is an example of a map that has everything in it.

The same issue applies to the idea of Best Map. Are we talking about best map in terms of its technical mapmaking value or its entertainment value? Now if we choose entertainment value I wouldn't be surprised if everyone, except me, jumped aboard the Temple Siege bandwagon and called Temple Siege and UnholyUrine the best map and mapmaker. Not surprisingly, Temple Siege is currently in the lead. It should be renamed Best Map Fad.

Cats and mice had a fad, certain bounds had a fad. Does that make the creators the best mapper?
I'm pretty sure that everyone will agree that someone with a negative IQ could create a cat and mice map.

My point is, don't think about the categories just vote :P

But the popular maps I'm referring to aren't just fads that pass. For example, MillenniumArmy's maps aren't fads and even though they aren't amazing works of triggering and even though people could easily trigger it, the thing people probably couldn't equal him in is coming up with the original idea in the first place. And to show that his maps aren't just fads, there are clans that are still around that play his maps.

Your examples are irrelevant as well. I was talking about specific mappers and specific maps. You're mentioning broad categories of maps.

And my underlying point is that sure you can just mindlessly vote, but it's better to also analyze why you voted because then you know your reason and purpose and you're conscious of it. Ultimately you end up make a better decision and the categories become more defined. It's like life. You can perform the same routine all day like a zombie and you'll still be considered alive. But if you look at your life and think about what you've done and why you've done it then you've created meaning. You've acknowledged that you have free will and accept the consequences of your decision.

What Best mapper and best map mean are like the philosophical questions of mapmaking.

I think devilesk raises a lot of good points but I also think it's clear that he's going far too in-depth for this topic as he tends to do. He will do as he will do.

While I'm thinking about it... I really should change my 'best map' choice but I don't know what to... I just put Tetris because I thought it was so awesome that someone had done a Tetris map well. Also it was the last map I played when I was testing it with him... in any case, I'll think about it.
