ZvT Training by Stone
Hey guys, i'm not an established map maker, i think the last map i made was probably around 2001, i touched on some scai3 and a few of the other tools which where around at the time from camelot systems, i found the whole mapping & editing sc thing marvelous but never really made anything with the tools before, i guess i just enjoyed playing the game more so then spending the time making any maps. but after all these years i find the pro-gamer in my self slowing down a bit and one night i just suddenly had the urge to make a ZvT training map, being a sole zerg player many years now i feel i know the 1v1 game to a okay standard i would say. i think if i remember now, i just wanted to make a quick map so that i could test of timings against, but i just got swallowed up by all the information available from staredit and next thing i knew i was trying to carve out a masterpiece, well... in my eyes at least :) but theirs still a great deal to do, so on that note let me give you a quick overview of what i'm trying to achieve.

An advanced Terran (computer) v Zerg (human) 1v1 computer for Destination. Capable of exploiting weaknesses within the enemies build order, unit production, base layout, micro and macro. In my first attempt (OLD TRIG), computers units were spawned on a timer, in the newer version map computer mines and constructs his buildings & units just like every other player (without cheating), this was a huge task trying to occomplish this and i am currently still working towards this.

SPECIFICATIONS
  • Players
    Requires 1 players (1-3 observers)
  • Map
ICCUP Destination (all right reserved to the original creator, not me)

FEATURES
  • Play your standard ZvT, this map is made to improve your standard 1v1 game
  • Comp uses resources to construct units/buildings and thus can be slowed or destroyed by killing his eco
  • Comp macro's / micros units reasonably effectively (this is on going ofc)
  • ... (i will fill this out when i can think of something ^^)

SCREENSHOTS/DEMO

Ok just want to make this very clear now, this is a work in progress and i have working on different parts of the main script in different maps.
for example, i have vulture map just for improving the vulture micro, wraith map for wraith micro etc etc. so for the moment it all in bits and pieces.
These screen shots are comprised across all the different maps.

Screen Shots of comp in action!

Main Base, no cheating here! 32 minerals after first round of mining

Comp teching into 2 port wraith, note information like "wraith 1 complete" is displayed for testing

Comp expanding & setting up bunk for defence

Triggered construction of scvs including build time

SCV scouts and uses a radius (location) of sight for high & low ground and retreates to harras expo if it sees a drone comming

With some CC bodgeyness scv can mine out the back mineral patch. can be checked if complete with unit/move

Demo of bunker rush

Demo of vulture 1

Demo of vulture 2

Demo of vulture 3

Demo of wraith 1

PROGRESS
oww i'd really hate to call it, could be a while :) but i'm working on it most days.

Looks really cool if you can actually get it to do a lot of this authentically.

Are you going to allow the player to choose what strategy his opponent goes, for special practice?

thats a good idea, i'll keep it in mind. i still have lots of mid/late game work to do. i'll post more info about how the comp plays tommorow.

Sweet, this should be really cool. Maybe make it say gg when it's going to lose?

He used triggers to do it. It isn't a true custom AI. If you wanna make your own, check out broodwarai.com.

Hey, I was just wondering what program you used to be able to record those videos and convert them into .gif

By the way, how is that map coming along?

hi, i used GunCam (growlersoftware.com) to make the recording in avi first, i found through testing that GunCam has a slightly better frame rate at screen scraping then Camtasia Studio. Although if you intend to just make gifs, then just using Camtasia Studio would be fine. I then took the avi into camtasia resized it and ajusted the frame rate and colours then just exported as a gif.

to be totaly honest is was such a while ago im not 100% sure i used the method above as i have a few different programs i use for video editing.
GunCam (great screen scraper)
Camtasia Studio (nice tool set)
Adobe Image Ready (good for making gifs and compressing images)
VirtualDub (good for editing and compressing avi's, can also split avi into gif)

i hope that helps. sorry it has been a while and i dont remember exactly which combination of these tools i used.

As for my map, thanks for the message, nice to see some one is looking out. I made some huge updates to it since i made my inital post. But i lost a bit of steam and began playing more games instead of mapping, however recently ive began mapping again and made a few small maps here and their for team liquid. As far the as progress goes, i have almost finished the macro side of the script, although the build order could perhaps be better, the majority of the computers build comes together, and expansions and all that work. building placement is all sorted and unit and building construction times were sync'ed with death counter timers. the AI was totaly ran off triggers, buying units and reducting the money through triggers.

after i was reasonably satisfied with the macro of the computer, i began working on the attacking micro, i got to the stage where i was working on the vulture micro, which is when i found out about location grids and some of the fancy things u can do with that overlord spawning techniques to determin the direction in which a unit engages. i got quite caught up with that for while considering wether or not to use that technique for the vultures. it at this point when i ran out of steam lol :) but like i said, i still continue working on the map hopefully very soon. thanks for your intrest. i'll post this reply on the forum to just to let people know where i'm upto.

hi Warlord_Master,

When you create several air units over the same location, certain units (overlords, devourers) will spawn in a specific pattern.
This pattern is demonstrated in the following article:
http://www.staredit.net/wiki/Grid_Systems

Beacuse of this consistent pattern, locations can be moved around to each side of the target. It's a little more complicated then that,
but if you read through the article above and then take a good look at the attached maps, you'll begin to see how it works.

Apos recently finished a vulture micro map where he chose to use devourers (instead of lords) and setup 2 complete rings of locations around the unit.
giving it a very wide range of detection from all angles.
http://www.staredit.net/topic/9792/

also worth noting in the attached maps is a 2nd technique with pylon and shifting location which i believe is what is used although i dont know much about it, i just know it is needed when using this technique on more then a single unit. read everything in the wiki on locations and grids, and everything else for that matter its an awsome resource.
