All right, I think I've cooled down enough to discuss this properly, and you guys definitely deserve an explanation. Yes, it was my thread, but obviously we all had some discussion going on in there.
Basically, on the HoN forums I was a GM. We had quite a few, and the GMs mostly picked a section, stayed there, and we tried to respect each others space. Specific section moderators were thrown in where help was needed.
There were about 20 or so of us when this all happened, we were overseen by Chavo, who was overseen by S2Fielding.
I think quite obviously, when you deal with moderators, you're dealing with community-minded people. Moderators are not in sales, marketing, or anything having to do with the dollars and cents. Chavo how ever was directing the moderators in a way that put money over people. It'd be nice for HoN to be a success, it'd be nice for S2 to make money off their game, and it'd be nice to help them do it. However when asked to put that 30$ fee above community contributors I refused. I was not about to sell out members that you can't buy. SEN is a shining example of players supporting a game that is years past it's prime. You can't pay someone to be that, and not every gamer or every game can do what we have done here for Starcraft.
In my mind, I could keep supporting HoN till the day they take the servers offline. HoN has the potential to have the same 10 year staying power SC does. But when you ask me to help manage your community, and then have a problem when I put that community over any amount of money, something has got to give. And something did give.
After being chased out of the Suggestions forum by Nome whom I personally vouched for to have his mod position, I went over to Off Topic. OT was originally just to get rid of all the pointless BS scattered in General and such. I however had a different plan for it. I imposed standards, enforced rules, wrote stickies, and gave infractions to those who didn't follow them. I was strict, I was unpopular, but I did my job and no thought of costing S2 a pre-order ever bothered me. I wasn't here to make sales I was here to keep the community in line. You may not have realized but HoN has a HUGE population of channers/SA members, and the meme spouting, racism and bigotry runs rampant. You should see the moderator logs. Worse was when I got PMs about how I was wrong when they broke the rule. I haven't seen such arrogance since Esponeo.
Anyway, they decided my strict attitude in OT was going to cost too many pre-orders, and that the community wasn't worth a dime, because every cent was worth more than every mod, contributor, and spammer combined. I argued my case with Chavo many times, he continually reverted to type, and so I deleted the majority of my own posts, and called it quits.
That's what happened. And that's why not only am I done with their community, but I'm giving a heads up to ours: A lot of you guys are fun to play with, but some of you are pure assholes who have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. You give bad advice, use bad builds, and generally make some of our bad players worse, and I'm done letting you. I'm imposing the same rule I imposed over in the Melee section:
If you don't know what you're talking about, don't open your mouth. No advice is better than bad advice.
And that's where we go from here.
