*VERY GRAPHIC* Texting While Driving PSA

This advertisement is coming under a lot of fire for being too graphic for teens to watch. I don't know about you guys, but when I did driver's ed some of the movies were arguably much worse than this. I think that if this is the only way the statement will be made, this is how it should be done.
So any strong opinions about driving and texting? I believe it is illegal in all states. Its illegal for all ages in Colorado, and its illegal to even talk on a cell phone while driving until you're 18.

edit: it is illegal to talk on a cell phone and drive at the same time.

Are you sure about that?

Driving is not to be mixed with any other kind of activities, besides chatting with whoever is in the car with you, I guess. Gore is... Silly. I think it will help getting the message through.

Anyway, I think one would have to be very stupid to text while driving...

Heh...I stand corrected. I could have sworn that I read differently in the paper, but whatever.

Both talking and texting while driving are illegal in California.

In terms of the general law, I think it's dangerous to do so, but sometimes there are times when it seems sort of needed.. I guess that's what Bluetooth headsets are for.

It's legal to text here, but not to talk on the phone. Which I find is stupid. I think phones should be banned from driving all together.

Here in Québec, our government is using a very wise way to warn people from things like that:
Before 21h, they should a gore-free version of their message as publicity between TV emissions and after 21h, they use the one which shocks people.
I believe it is the only way to make people really care about that kind of publicity.
I think we could call that a "beneficial minor post-traumatic stress" ;)

I saw "It was funnier the second time" as a comment and almost died

It was a little too over the top for me. Should be a bit more realistic.

It's illegal in the UK to have a phone in your hand while driving. They have used limited shock tactics before in the adverts here - I think the worst one was taken off air a couple of weeks after it came on, after numerous complaints about it being shown before 9pm.

In it a man on his mobile crashes and as the seatbelt and airbag stops him it cuts to a view of inside his body, of his internal organs being thrown against his ribcage, which cracks. Then one of the cracked bones punctures his lung and blood starts to leak out. Eventually they came out with a cut version of the ad.

I think it's important to raise awareness of the danger, but I still think people will do it - I see them doing it all the time.

Edit: Kame - now there's a name I haven't seen in a long while. :)

In florida you can do both, but you can't use an ear peace or any type of headset to talk on your phone with (like no blue tooth).

Anyways, everyone knows Canada has the best PSA's -

OMFG! Now my heart seriously bounced when I saw the end :S
Nearly gave me a heart-attack.
This is exactly the kind of stuff they should show at the TV (after a certain, as already done)... else, I'm 80% sure people don't care about the ads -.-'

Well, it's obvious driving while distracted (like talking on a cell phone while driving) isn't the brightest of ideas. and texting while driving is nothing less then Moronic. Seriously, if your eyes can't be on the road while you're driving then you really shouldn't be on the road to begin with. To make matters worse, your attention is clearly set on texting someone, instead of driving your vehicle. The digits are small, so maybe if you're lucky, about three car crashes later, you can finish your message - "Hi im on my way"

My own personal opinion is that they shouldn't take off the adds just because they contain graphic details, censorship is especially stupid considering our entire race's history was bloody, where we would burn "Witches" and castrate numerous people over our self righteous beliefs. In the end, people will remain stupid unless they get visual information of the consequences, or unless they suffer the outcome them selves. That person who died will only remain dead, and the least we can do is give their death more meaning, show people how the last moments of their lives were wasted and stripped away from them, so others know not to do the stupid things them selves.

I my self don't believe anyone is actually stupid enough to text while driving, but who knows, we have the organs of a pig and we're just naked monkeys afterall.

Relatively ancient and inactive

I think people should be able to cope with gore (aww, poor things saw some blood and had a nasty dream, boo hoo), and I think that people should only be allowed to drive after testing on behavior in stressful situations and while multitasking, and possibly after checking on drinking and drug-taking patterns. That pretty much means that the remaining drivers will be fine while doing damn near anything. Without changing the current system, I think texting should be illegal an talking shouldn't be. What idiot can't drive with one hand (assuming they have two)?

It was really good. It portrayed a real life situation. It was probably a real incident that they reconstructed.

I saw them talk about this on the news just yesterday too.

People Who Multitask Are Bad At It

Conan O'Brien did a bit about that study on his show also night. It was pretty funny. It seems relevant here.

Does it occur to you that some people just react to gore differently and just can't handle it? It's like people who can't go on rollercoaster rides or else they get sick. Though, I am sure that there are others that just determine it inappropriate for everyone even they can stomach it themselves.

Hi Will! ^___________^ How are you? Wow, off topic. I actually quoted this for a reason. Its funny that people don't see a culture difference between the states and Britain, but I think this proves it. This PSA was released in a culture that seems to use shock in their suggestion. Is that correct?

I was looking through the YouTube comments before I posted it here, and a woman said that she loved gorey horror movies. What spoke to her was the devoid look in the baby's eyes about halfway through, because she's a new mom. If I had a baby I think that would give me nightmares too.

This is perhaps one of the stupidest reasonings I have ever encountered. Because of things societies did, societies completely different than ours, hundreds of years ago, that is a valid reason for showing gore publicly?
Not that I'm against this campaign. I'm really completely neutral to the idea of gore, but I obviously don't think either texting or talking on the phone are right to do while driving. Here in Wisconsin, both are legal.

I think a lot of states are more recently passing legislation in the US to ban texting while driving, because I think (but am not sure) the fed government threatened to withdraw highway funding if they didn't.

I think if you're under 21 or 18, though, you can't talk on the phone at all.

I texted while driving once (when it was legal), and it scared the shit out of me. Never again.

I find it funny that texting was only made illegal in CA recently, rather than packaging it with the hand-free phone law.

EDIT:
My job required me to do a lot of driving and I got a lot of calls while doing so, so my bluetooth was a godsend. Either way it's all dumb. Having one hand off the wheel doesn't seem like the issue. My lack of concentration when I'm trying to figure something out over the phone is an issue. Way to go, laws!
