I am curious what everyone thinks what are the best parts of each OS (
Winows,
Macintosh,
Unix/Linux, etc.) and also what would be (in their opinion) in the
Best-of-All-Worlds OS (sorry, I just picked a name at random in a little time).
NOTE: By saying
each OS, I mean from all versions of the group, even if it is from
Windows 3.1, or (my stupid thinking of saying this,)
DOS 1!

http://blog.topix.com/archives/000016.htmlWhat are all those OS Researchers doing at Google?
Rob Pike has gone to Google. Yes, that Rob Pike -- the OS researcher, the member of the original Unix team from Bell Labs. This guy isn't just some labs hood ornament; he writes code, lots of it. Big chunks of whole new operating systems like Plan 9.
Look at the depth of the research background of the Google employees in OS, networking, and distributed systems. Compiler Optimization. Thread migration. Distributed shared memory.
I'm a sucker for cool OS research. Browsing papers from Google employees about distributed systems, thread migration, network shared memory, GFS, makes me feel like a kid in Tomorrowland wondering when we're going to Mars. Wouldn't it be great, as an engineer, to have production versions of all this great research.
Google engineers do!
I want GooOS to be the best. As if google isn't already good enough.

Yes, search engines intergrated into

lol@april2004 article.
Linux is the best operating system. It's free, fast, powerful. All it needs is 3rd party support, which it doesn't get only because Windows is a more popular OS. :\
None.
MAC is the most complete, reliable OS.
None.
MAC ownzorz windows in so many ways. Linux is on a whole different playing field.

I am sorry but, they are only good to a limit but,if you are a programmer or a gamer MAC is not for you.Now linux thats Open Source and I have tried one which surprised me.Windows is good in many ways yet bad in others.I say Linux for the win.Windows in second only cause you game and program on it easier.

Totally agree with you! =)

The only OS I have ever used much is Windows, from what I saw of Mac I didn't like that, but I suppose I'm biased in this 'Windows vs Mac' type conflict. I heard a quote once that seemed to make sense from what I do know about the OSes though.
Windows is like a mansion, it's nice, but it's really easy to break into.
Mac is like a tent, anyone can break in, but no one wants to.
Linux is like a fortress, no one is getting in.
I agree with your quote! I like windows Xp better than windows vista
I am a Mathematician
1. Vista Home Premium x64.
2. XP
3. Linux
4. Fried shit
5. Mac
On a more serious note, I like Windows's ease of use (that's mainly because I was brought up on it) and third party support (games FTW). I haven't used Linux or any version of Mac extensively, although I must say I like Linux a lot better. Free things==good

Neither of those are because Windows is a good operating system, though. Ease of use is because it's most popular, so that's what you've been exposed to. Third party support is only because third party developers are going to program for the most popular operating system. It's not like Windows is a better operating system, or it's better for gaming, it just has support.

1. Linux
2. Your mother's attempt at an OS.
3. Windows
4. A steaming pile of dog Sh!!t
5. Mac

I never said Windows was better, I said I liked it more.

The thread was about "best" OSes, but yeah, you're right.
I am almost a troll when it comes to people liking Windows, I guess =|
My bad.

LOL?
Seriously, Vista Ultimate beats Home Premium hands down.
And, my left tonenail beats Mac hands down.
I've never used Linux, though.

Let me explain why windows sucks... You see it takes up resources when it does tasks right? Well it doesn't close the tasks when it is done with them. So it keeps using resources, but than it is also using the ones from the new things it pulls up.
ALSO, Windows doesn't fix its errors until you reboot a couple times, it'll keep saying error messages until it is a pile of shit.

And uhh, whats up with people hating on Mac.. why do you all hate on the operating system itself..?

Windows 2000, XP, and Vista do not do that. It sounds like you are describing Windows 9x/ME. Windows 2000, XP, Vista, etc. are all from different code than Windows 9x/ME, so you can't compare them with each other.
