Quote from Greo
A man lives on the tenth floor of a building. Every morning he takes the elevator down to the lobby and leaves the building. In the evening, he gets into the elevator, and, if there is someone else in the elevator - or if it was raining that day - he goes back to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes to the seventh floor and walks up three flights of stairs to his apartment. How come?

He's the doorman. Or he works there. Or something like that. The elevator guy... something like that. You get the idea.

Yea, I remember this one too. I think it was something along the lines of:

He (or someone else) has an umbrella, and the elevator is full (or wet or something).

None.

Dec 1 2008, 3:23 am Kaias Post #203

He's a midget, and cannot reach the button for the tenth floor.

If I'm correct, I don't have any riddle to follow up with.

None.

Dec 1 2008, 3:30 am Vi3t-X Post #204

He's a midget, and cannot reach the buttom for the tenth floor.

In the morning, he hits the Lobby button.
In the evening, if someone else is in the elevator, they can push the 10th button for him.
If it was raining, he'd have his umbrella, so he could push the 10th button.

Worst case scenario, he can only reach the 7th button, and then walk the rest of the way.

4th 5th

I hope you guys didn't look that up online... because I did. I just didn't bother posting the answer after that because it would be lame. I call next!

Here's a simple one... what are the missing #'s in this sequence:

1, 2, 4, 5, 3, 7, 11, 12, __, __

Nah, I've heard it before.
8 and 14?

We can't explain the universe, just describe it; and we don't know whether our theories are true, we just know they're not wrong. >Harald Lesch

13, 8

Nope and nope.

Is it a pattern, or can you solve it with a formula?

I'm not inclined to answer that question. I'll probably start giving hints tomorrow if no one has it yet.

13 and 14. The numbers are in order of number of letters in each number, with only the first two this way shown.

Dec 1 2008, 11:05 pm Oyen Post #212

Hmm...I'm gonna guess 14 and 18.

Whoops, Oyen got it.

13, 6?

Btw. Dan, this riddle has the same "problem" as the Death at the window riddle. There's a number of solutions possible and we he to guess which one you're waiting for.

why? What's the pattern?

If they are a # of solutions possible, then I'd like you to show me.

And no one's gotten it yet.

To explain patterns can be lenghty but if it satisfies you I'll do my best:
13, 8 and 13, 6: I wasn't sure here if the 6 that got replaced by 3 should be carried over or just forgotten about.
3 (1 number) is skipped
and replaces the number 3 steps further
then the sequence continues for 1 number and 8, 9 and 10 (3 numbers) are skipped
and replace the numbers 6 steps further
then the sequence continues for 3 numbers and etc. is skipped
1, 2, 4, 5, 3, 7, 11, 12, 13, 6/8, 9, 10, 17, 18, 19, etc.

The 13, 14:
3 is skipped
and replaces the number 3 steps further
then the sequence continues for 1 number
and 8, 9 and 10 are skipped
which replace the numbers 8 steps further
1, 2, 4, 5, 3, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 6/8, 9, 10, 19,

Color Codes:
Constant Formula (in this case x = 3 * i; i being nr. of Iteration)
Dependency 1
Dependency 2

Wow... writing it all down and thinking it through exactly really gave me a headache...

As you will realize one can come up with more dependencies and constants that fit into the pattern.
Also if you look hard enough into it you can probably come up with another text that describes what is happening, which would open even more possibilities.
