So, I'm going to write a JFK "Profiles in Courage" essay (
info) .
It's about 1600 students applying. As some background, I'm an AP US History student, I'm a sophomore, and I'm also a Mensan (IQ=157).
I'm also lazy. Extremely lazy. Pure lazy. Failing classes due to accumulated zeros lazy.
I write in a rather verbose, dry, style. Most of my essays get scores in the 90-100 range.
I'm also relatively interested/informed in history, I read history books for fun.
Given this information about me, and also my pure sexiness, do you think I have a chance to win pretty much free admission to college and recognition/ potentially 5000 dollars?
None.
Everyone who enters has a chance.
Everyone who enters and gives it effort has a chance.
None.
Relatively ancient and inactive
I really doubt it. Considering there are many many gifted children of poor families who would pay a few fingers to get this award for free admission to college. Good luck, though - it could just be my unnaturally dynamic cynicism picking up.
None.
You'll have more of a chance of winning if you enter than doing nothing =D
None.
The question is this.
I'm really fucking lazy.
Therefore, if working hard and producing my best still gives me little chance of winning, I don't want to work.
What I'm asking is do I have a significant chance of winning?
None.
As much as I hate it, but what race you are is a HUGE factor for many colleges when it comes to deciding whether to admit someone or not. At least in Texas, it is called Affirmative Action. If you are black or hispanic who has the same grades as some white or asian person, you will probably have higher priority, especially if it's a top school or Ivy league college you're thinking about. I am asian and when I applied for the University of Texas at Austin (which here in texas is like the top
public school) I kind of got rejected in the sense that I have to go somewhere else for a year, maintain a decent GPA, and then be able to get in (So now is my second year of college and I just transferred here to UT). However, many of my latino and black friends, who were lower ranked than me and had overall a resume that wasn't quite as good as mine, got in. Infact, I applied for biology at the time (which is a really easy major to get into) and they applied for shit like Electrical Engineering and Business. Pretty much right now in many good colleges, the ratio between whites & especially asians and blacks & latinos is outrageous; they try to balance out the ethnicity races. My sister's boyfriend is white whose majoring in Math. He and 50 people from UT got accepted into for Princeton's Grad school, but the thing is he was only one of two white that made it.
None.
You have to give it your best effort, or you can guarantee you won't have a good chance. I've never read an essay of yours, so I can't say based on the info you gave (It's like saying "I'm 5'10", 170 lbs, and I have black hair, will this girl like me?"). Even if I liked what I saw, I couldn't speak for the people judging these things. You've got to find some way of motivating yourself. That's just good advice in general. Laziness can really fuck you over.
