Why does society hate naked people?
I mean sure it is kinda strange that anyone would want to walk around without clothes on, but I don't see the criminality in doing so. Its a stupid rule made by uptight people who think they are better than animals. Its not like nobody has seen a naked body before. If you ever change clothes, BAM, or if you go to a museum, BAM these prestigious institutions show painting after painting of naked people. I don't get how that changes when you go outside.
The one thing that really urks me is how little resistance this law has gotten in the past. Clothing as mandatory is not considered a bad thing. Personally, I see clothes as useful items to help us stay warm, but at times I wish we could remove them.

Everybody GET NAKED!

Just here for the pie

I actually laughed when I saw this. Tomorrow, all of us should walk around naked. VIVA LA RESISTANCE!

You should join one of those nude colonies or something. I forgot what they were called, but everyone lives there naked.

Well, I don't think it's right to walk around naked. Exposure causes lust, and that can interfere with the way we think.
Can you seriously tell me that you could have a decent conversation with Megan Fox naked? (For that matter, could you do it even with her clothes on? lol)
Not to mention it would totally relinquish personal taste and individuality.

I don't think I could have any type of conversation with anyone if they were nude.

Relatively ancient and inactive

I've thought about this (surprising, neh?) before, and I've come to the conclusion that we can blame religion for this. Greece didn't have this - Olympics were run by nude men. Then came Christ and the Church was like 'OMG WE ARE ALL BORN SINFUL AND UR BODY IS SINFUL AND SEX IS SINFUL HIIIIIIDDDDEEEE EEVERYYYYYTHING!!1!!', and that's how it happened. I don't really think, if we let people walk nude, that it would negatively effect society. Think about why you can't have a conversation with a nude person or why it can incite lust - isn't the primary reason lack of practice? Babies don't mind walking around naked, but it's ingrained in society and they learn that it's considered indecent. If we stop treating lack of clothes like a horrible thing, I don't think the world will tip over and everyone will die.

Plus, I think everyone's going to be wearing something in the winter anyway, and most in the summer as well. No 'reliquish personal taste and individuality'.

Are you seriously blaming religion on clothing? Is there a damned topic we can go through without it involving religion?

People have been wearing clothing forever, not just since ancient Greece. Besides, Greece had a very in depth religion and people still didn't wear anything at their Olympics

You're not listening to me. I'm blaming religion for pretty much forcing clothing. I'm not blaming all religion - just the more recent ones, which have all been in turn influenced with whichever came up with the idea first. I think it's Christianity, but they may have gotten the idea from somewhere else.

Trace the hate of nudity back, and it ends up at one religion or another.

Oh I see.

Religion does not support nudity because it almost ensures adultery.

How? When's the last time someone checked? If you grow up in a society that's used to nudity, I really think that just another naked person will be just that - just another person.

Anyway, I'm not saying that sex on the street is good. By all means, arrest those.

The sword and the faith

Look at europe compared to the US: Many girls go topless in europe. However as an American, i cant honestly say i would be able to not stare should i visit europe. Why? Its the country i grew up in and the way it influenced me about breasts and having them shown as an everyday thing.

Centreri wins.

Yes!

We only think that public nudity is bad because we're taught that. Some cultures, past, present (and possibly future) have different stances on this. Most people in those cultures thinks that public nudity is fine, because they haven't been taught that it's 'wrong'. There is no real 'right' or 'wrong' here, it's just what people think. On the issue of public nudity in 'Western' societies, I don't think it will be allowed for a very long time.

Personally, I wouldn't like someone walking around outside with no clothes on, but I realise that is because I've simply been brought up that way.

Well, we can't just right here and now declare that all men and women should be allowed to go nude; if such a thing were ever to be done it'd have to be gradual. Just ask yourselves right now: would you like the idea of seeing some 80 or 90 year old nannies walking around nude? If you asked someone who was raised in a nudist colony (yes, thank you SiN) the same thing, they'd find it perfectly normal.

ALL PRAISE YOUR SUPREME LORD CORBO

What..?
I can't believe you're actually attacking art on this one. Nudity is considered basically an heresy if you were an artist you wouldn't actually do a nude because people don't actually like them nor understand them it's a really hard decision to make one. Besides as some said the nudes on paintings are about expressing perfection, you will hardly see a really fat man naked on an sculpture or a really bad looking women on a painting. Most of the sculptures ever made nude are based on "the perfect roman men" Michael Angelo based himself on the gods, perfection and so did with women but there aren't as many women as there are men because... in old times women were really hated.

Anyway, nudity as an art form is really hard to get and that's why you're coming to such comparisson right now because you don't understand it, you're basically calling it "the same" compared to an event that sometimes takes place because of a stupid college bet or drunken boys wanting to have some fun or really stupid people that think that if they get nude they'll be cool and be opposing the government and rules in some sort of twisted way.

I do understand however, what you people say on that nobody came here with clothes or anything to cover them but in a future assuming I'll have a daughter I wouldn't like to be walking on the street and a retard suddenly appears naked and she sees that. "I don't think anyone has never seen a naked body before" you say? Well, guess what? kids are innocent beings and most than all I say it's for respect to them, not only adults live on earth, you know.

And I like my clothes, it keeps the dirt out of me, protects me from the sun, cold, wind, rain or whatever it could sicken me and I see no reason why taking off my clothes would help me more than what it would damage me. Thinking on why people hate nudist just because you want to see breats hanging all around is not right. (not saying that you do but some people mentioned it)

fuck you all

I wasn't attacking art, if thats what it came off as, I'm sorry.

The naked body as a form of human perfection has been lost since the renaissance era. It surely took a different path after Picasso and Matisse had there way with the form. Today, there are many different representations of the nude body, and there are many pictures of grotesque naked people.
And yes I realize that comparing ant artistic nude to an actual nude is a stretch in many cases, yet I think that is primarily from our social perspectives on nudity.

Your point that we clothe ourselves for respect of the children is rather in interesting one, because for one I see children in American society as being one of the most neglected subset of people. And the fact that there exists many cultures in Africa that have developed with nudity, and their children are just fine. (Excluding the poverty that western civilization has placed upon them.)

My point was to ask the question: Why is it that we are offended by nude people?

Is it because we truly don't want to see what anyone looks like on the inside, and would prefer the deceptive clothing styles that6 conform many to brand names. It might create a sense of unity, but it would hide our true selves. I think that its because people don't like the way they look. Either they are too fat, too scrawny, too disfigured ect. This fear to show the rest of the world what we really are like sickens me.

Honestly, it think it would do our culture a lot of good, so long as we still keep our ways of criticizing those who do not meet up with our standards of human form. In other words, the ugly people who wanted to go naked would be ridiculed into wearing clothes. :bleh:
It would create a new urge for people to get into shape, something that our society has really lost track on. Maintaining a healthy body in a traditional sense has really gone out the window. BAH I'm digressing...

To sum up a general idea that is not indicated anywhere before, but to which I am alluding towards, our society sucks because were too stuck up to realize that were not better than any other culture, and the only reason we think we are better is because were a bunch of bastards who like beating up people with little means of fighting back.

We are raised with the thought that public nudity is something awkward. Beliefs and reactions to certain things set in early childhood are often very strong, even if illogical and/or based on hate (racism, for example).
