There may or may not be more than one more mafia team... so there's really no way the detective could 110% trust any mayor, unless the detective gets to differentiate between mafia teams when he investigates dead bodies, in even in that case, it'd take days for the detective to be sure. A little analysis:
MAFIA - They've invaded the town, and they each kill someone every night. They may or may not know the identity of other mafia, thus they may not all be on the same side.
Each mafia group may collectively use the following abilities once per night:
Each mafia group suggests that there are multiple groups. It also suggests that the groups know their own members.
Therefore, the 5-mafia premise seems invalid.
I'm assuming a lot of things here, but I'm guessing there are six Mafia. (Two groups of three).
Either way, I think Nude or someone who's more pwnage than I am should post combination lists for 4 mafia and six mafia.
Multiple groups wouldn't work for under four and more than six is excessive.
Also, the first night's kills will be only Mafia kills (no Saint).
Therefore, the probability is that the first nights kills will consist mainly or entirely of town-aligned roles, as the Mafia have no clue as to the identity of the opposing side.

Actually, it's quite the opposite. You have no
hard facts that say "Dapper is a Townsperson". I could easily do the same things you are, and be mafia at the same time, using my tactics as a guise for who I really am. It makes more sense to not trust anyone until we can get some ground in the game. I'm not saying you're mafia, but I'm not saying you're definately a townie either.

Remember though, parties may vary in numbers, so there may be a 3 group mafia, and say a 2 group mafia "squad". So if these persons were to use their abilities while knowing thier party allies, we would be screwed.
