My BEST friend finally wants to play SC2 and D3 with me. What's been holding him back is that he's been a complete jew with his money his whole life (which is also why he has 20k+ in CD's, while I'm 10k in student loan debit).
He is ready to finally spend more than $200 on a single item. He is willing to spend around $500 on a pc that can play those 2 said games on medium graphics.

this. I would never buy this just because I detest HP with a passion, but if you cannot exceed 500 dollars under any circumstances... this is as good as it gets.

I built a computer for less than $500 and it ran SC2 in ultra.
I bought an overpriced (by about 200 dollars) computer about two years ago for 700 dollars and it runs sc2 on ultra.

plays sc2 just fine. I wouldn't recommend it for a new system, and some prices have gone up, while others have gone down or are out of stock now.

Maybe if there was no antialiasing, he played 1v1, and never went above 50 food, he could get playable framerates. In any other scenario (endgame PvP battles, skirmishes in 4v4, UMS games like Desert Strike), I doubt he would find it consistently running at a high framerate. Even an i5-2500k + Radeon 6950 gets brought to its knees in an average game of Phantom.

But yeah, I've played Phantom with my i7 920 @ 4GHz, 12GB DDR3, and HD 4870 1GB with everything maxed and it gets awful slow when everyone starts maxin out.
Either your friend can pay more for a laptop that has discrete graphics or he can buy a desktop. Those are his choices.

Now that I think about it, it probably like really high and not ultra. I had textures and terrain set to ultra, but then other things like physics and reflections, I put on low. Regardless, my cheap rig could play this game a hell lot better than medium, which is what CAFG's friend is aiming for. ;o
