Hello, Terrain Forum, I am seeking terrain to be made for a
Civilization map. I keep talking about making one, but never get around to it. I have a ton of ideas that have sat around in a TXT file for a long time that I should probably put into a map since it should be fun. Terrain is not one of my strongest points, so I am enlisting the help of whomever wishes to help me in this project.
For those terrainers who have not seen or played a Civilization map, take the
Civilization maps on SEN and
other maps with similar terrain.
The general gameplay involved on the map will involve: Starting an empire, expanding said empire, researching tech, making choices between tech/military/wonders (wonders give nice bonuses), eventually conquering the world or winning the space race. Ideally the terrainer will already know what takes place in an average Civ map (as well as what I hope to improve). I am, of course, willing to play other Civ maps with the interested terrainers and explain what is going on and what I wish to do with my version.
I want something that is:
- 256 x 256
- Not actually of the earth or a real continent or other portion of the earth.
- With about 15 start locations that can be randomized among the players. General form would be a couple of continents (with some hills and mountains and some choke points) and possibly a few smaller island starts as well.
- Relatively balanced is nice. I can handle the placement of units beyond the beacons. I can probably even draw up rough terrain that the terrainer can pretty up. Things don't have to be mathematically perfect, but shouldn't be unfair to particular starts.
- Has a good screenfull of terrain (12x256) running the top of the map for game stuff.
If you are interested, please post here or send me a PM.
Thank you.
The following are examples of acceptable terrain shapes, courtesy of Civ III's World Editor.
The Xs represent start locations and the colors represent terrain types, though I don't really care if they are changed. Or if any StarCraft map actually conforms to one of these. Their purpose is mainly to provide ideas for shapes of the landmasses.

I was working on a diplomacy map called Making History for the week-long domination contest but never finished it, mainly because I would have had to re-do all of the terrain. The terrain consisted of most of the world except for mainland Asia and if I remember correctly Scandinavia among other places, and I ran into that problem because I didn't give myself enough space by the time I reached that portion of terrain.
I don't have the map on me at the moment so if anyone can post it (I know a few people have it) please do. I also had a couple of unique mechanics in it that you could borrow, such as Ghosts being able to cloak when behind trees to set up ambushes.
He said he doesn't want it to be of the actual earth or a continent. ;O

What Dem0n said. Earth as it exists and most regions on it are not very balanced. Well, to an extent some it can be if it's divided up properly, but it's generally not. I don't want to use real places.

So post in File Request instead of my thread?

That does sound cool, but it something that I really want. I have more than enough mechanics spelled out.
I assume you're aware of my work on Diplomacy: Empires Moose. Let me in on the specifics and we'll see what we can do.
Of course, Ex, it's one of the files I linked to up there. I'll be in contact with you.
Of course. Though without terrain to use, testing is far off.
I've edited the first post with some idea for world shapes to be used by any potential terrainers who would care to assist me.
HMmmm
How many Continents d'you prefer?
I can make you a rough draft terrain, and you'll have to add all the doodads and terrain blending yourself
None.

I'm not picky on the number of continents, as you can see from the hypothetical landmass shapes in the topic post.
I'd prefer to do the work the other way around. If I could do that stuff myself, I wouldn't be asking for help with the terrain.
lol...
The problem is that the more doodad and blending you do, the less areas you allow players to build
None.
I will be able to terrain for you... (extended terrain only)
None.
Using the brush project you can alot of walkable extended terrain than i will layer over a few extended terrain pieces so that it looks pretty but gives the player plenty of room to build.
None.
sorry for the double post but I'm half way done the map... are you still working on this project cause i'm going to stop if tell me to.
None.
Yeah, I'm still ready to go ahead with it. I had started making my own terrain with the intent to just ask people to pretty it up, but didn't get very far into it. Thank you.
so do you want me to pretty up your map or do you you want me to send you my map when its finished and well go from there.
Edit : my map won't have that much extended terrain compared to temple siege because about 90 percent of extended terrain takes a lot of space but it will have enough for a civ type map... you'll see what i mean.

My map is nowhere near done, I'd like to see yours.
I don't really care about having a specific amount of extended terrain... playing Civ on Temple Siege terrain would most likely be horrendous.
give me til sunday or monday... although it won't be decorated with doodads other than the grey turbine thing to mark cities/capital cities
Edit : I'm done the basic outline... now i just need to make it look more pretty with extended terrain
Edit 2: For a civ map it has a ton of extended terrain... now i need to work on it via balance perspective
