I'm watching BlizzCon 2008 right now and this is what I've got from the announcements.
-New Class Released for D3 - It is now Barbarian, Shaman, and Wizard. No answers about Paladin yet

because I'm racist because they seemed boring. The only interesting tree was holy. How are they rigged?
I must say, the wizard looks epic appealing. I thought the Witch Doctor was awesome, but Wizard's even better.

If they didn't split it, one of two things would've happened:
1: Stunted single-player campaign
2: Release OVER NIIIIINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAND years later.
Neither of these are desirable.
3: Hire more developers months ago when they realized this would be a problem to help tackle the problem by dumping some of the grunt work on them. (and yes they did realize it months ago)

But as for "rigged"ies, Hammerdins are rather infamous for their ability to solo essentially any region of the game without problems, involving minimal effort, risk, skill, knowledge, or time ( gogo 18k@10-frames+multihit, piercing, unresistable attacks and teleport ) , while still maintaining a fair MF level ( for those who care ) . Absolutely idealized builds can beat them, but are harder to make, and still aren't
quite as versatile - specialized ones can dominate individual bosses or areas, but their average speed for a full-game clear would be much lower. Smiters take on a similar role in PvP and boss-killing ( the gear to produce a character that can kill bosses faster than a cookiecutter Smiter can be a pain to acquire ) . Chargers are ( slightly ) famous for their capacity to, at mid-levels of 40s-50s, 1H-KO high level characters. Oh, and Conviction's about the most stupidly powerful party-spell ever, with Fanatacism, Meditation, and Salvation holding for those half-a-dozen builds that wouldn't benefit from it. And we can't forget the infinite Aura-stack glitches, for the while they stayed around.

While I'll probably get laughed out for my basically non-existent knowledge of D2 B.net, it always seemed to me that Sorc+Lightning Mastery+Epic Mana stores/regen = gg no rm.
Teleports give them unparalleled maneuverability, allowing them to basically micro enemies to death. As for mana, I've seen a level 70-odd Sorceress throw level 56 Fireballs nonstop for over 5 minutes. Sure, a pally's resistance aura could make him damn near bulletproof to a sorc's attacks, but teleport micro and infinite ammo would
eventually win the day.
Or at least, that's the theory.
