Dustin Browder, StarCraft 2’s lead game designer, has given an interview to IncGamers’s brand new StarCraftWire.net. He discusses everything from the map editor to super units in length and provides some insight into the gameplay design process.
Highlights: So when will the Starcraft II editor become available to modders?
I don’t know yet, it’ll certainly be shipped with the game but I don’t know the answer to whether it will be earlier. That would be cool though.
Could the StarCraft 2 map editor be released before the game? Blizzard has not done this before, but some other companies have turned to this move to increase interest in their game before it is released, especially if it has been baking in the development oven for a long while.
If this happens, it means we could get the editor months before the game comes out - when they finish with most of the game coding part, possibly before they start working on the campaign or melee maps that'll come with it. Wouldn't that be awesome?
None.
I do stuff and thingies... Try widening and reducing the number of small nooks and crannies to correct the problem.
you would need some of the mpq files? or? (especially unit data and models)
and I don't believe that they just upload their big mpq file somewhere.
btw, you cannot test the maps then.
So I would guess that would not happen. At least not for free.

I don't think Blizzard is greedy enough to make people pay to make stuff for their games, and there's nothing impossible about bringing a few MPQ files along. They don't say it won't happen, so it can happen.
None.
This is going to become Garry's Mod. But official.

It could be available in the beta attached to the rest of the game.
None.
It could be a pre-order thing. I really hope blizzard pulls a spore here.
Haha, if it was released before the game we could have some seriously badass maps ready for right when the actual game comes out. I'd like such a head start on making the aforementioned badass maps.

But what if they crash your computar?
None.
Why would they do that? this is the official editor, they shouldn't include anything that would crash your computer. Unless, theres a glitch or something.

How is that relevant? What does it have to do with releasing the editor before the game? Even if they can crash people what makes it different if the editor was released with or after the game? They'd still be able to crash.
None.
It would be a cool idea as long as they didn't make any significant changes in the time it takes to release the final product. Them releasing the map editor beforehand might mean they need to change stuff, which would in turn, suck if you had made stuff that will no longer be in the game.
None.

I doubt that. StarCraft II is far more advanced than WarCraft III that even WarCraft III professional authors themselves will have a trouble creating maps as a newly beginner of StarCraft II. And I also doubt that you know how polygons and geometry even work in level designing in which WarCraft III never had that with an exception of grids like StarCraft.
Especially since the unveiling of the Map Editor involved those.
Second, not a single word about the triggers.
The best anyone could do from the start would probably be an unbalanced, empty melee map.
None.
What would be the point of having the map editor if you can't test your maps to know what anything does?
None.
What if, instead of releasing Starcraft 2 or it's map editor, they released MapCraft, a game where you had to fight things like "TRIGGER BUGS", "GAME CRASHES", "MAP STEALERS" and the worst two of all "PROCRASTINATION" and "GIVING UP LIKE THE LAZY TEENAGE PUNKASS BITCH YOU ARE"?!
Adding all these features to the map editor will make certain things easier, but since most actions won't require complex planning and work-arounds it'll most likely be less fun for the mapmaker. And if this community is any evidence, you guys will announce your first Epic Map Projects only for them to amount to no more than 3 levels and some screenshots of "L337 terrain". =P
Sorry for cynicism.
None.
Yes, meticulous planning and work arounds are all the fun. I doubt I'll do any SCII Editing
None.
What would be the point of having the map editor if you can't test your maps to know what anything does?
WarCraft III had that "Test" feature in the Editor... where it automatically runs WarCraft III and immediately loads the map. The same goes to other games such as Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2, etc

but its the actual game that lets u test in the long run isnt it? if not then that map editor is gonna have a huge filesize :X!

I think I can figure out what everything does to start production on a map. Buggy as hell when I first test it, though
.

I reckon even if they did this it would ruin the excitement of playing the game before you make the game...
None.
Regardless, like the WarCraft: III editors, SCUMEdit (I think thats what its called, I forget) will most likely not be endorsed by ActivisionBlizzard. Why? It opens up so many tools that it virtually allows the player to forge a completely different game, minus the engine. Not Endorsed, so the parent company shouldn't care.
For example, take a look at the many RPGs on WarCraft III, or even some of those random Naruto Arenas.
