I can't seem to get my standard melee map to have fixed starting locations. Is it possible?

EDIT: Sorry I probably should've put this in the Map Production section.

Nope, it's alright here.
If you are using ScmDraft 2 go Scenario -> Forces and deselect "Randomize Start Locations".
If you have another editor there will be a similar setting.

Oh wait... you said MELEE? Then you're indeed in the wrong section.
This would be the right spot

But don't worry, I'll answer it nevertheless:
In melee you cannot fix the start locations. That's part of the melee feeling.

However, I think you can use "Alles erlaubt" (this is german for "everything allowed", I don't know the correct sc term, maybe someone can help out) when you want a "nearly standard melee game" with some modifications.

Starting locations are automatically random if it's not played in the UMS setting.
e.g. if I play an obs map as melee, sometimes I end up @ one of the observer starting locations.

So in that case this topic is in the right spot, because when I play this map as a UMS, the game ends instantly saying I win. I'm guessing there's something wrong with the triggers, but what? (By the way what's this almost-standard melee you speak of?) I kind of want to avoid doing UMS because then I have to worry about making A.I.s function as they should in a melee map.

If it's a normal melee map for 8 players there's no need to fix the locations.
If it's a campaign-type map you should make it UMS.
You instantly win as UMS because the default melee triggers make you win, since you have no enemies (you have to change some slots into computers, or have other people join the game). You also have to preplace main buildings, then run an AI Script with the Run Ai Script At Location action.

Why is there no need to fix the locations for a normal melee? I want players 1 and 2 to be in certain places.

This "almost melee" is in the list of game types when you create a game. When I'm not mistaken it's free for all in english. But I cannot tell you if this mode gives comps ai's. You should test that.
And as I said, when you need fixed start locations you cannot use melee.

None of the modes that give you a score will allow fixed locations, or people would just make maps rigged for them and get their scores really high.
