Okay so, hello, I just signed up today. Yadda yadda.

Anyway, I'm having a problem with map-making and playing the map.

So I'm making this map, just an adventure-style hack 'n' slash thing for 2 players (being made for a friend and I to enjoy over Bnet). I started it about 2 years ago in SCM Draft 2.0 (Beta 0.8.0) and got about halfway through it before stopping.

After re-opening it recently, I wanted to finish it for old times' sake. But I cannot edit it successfully.

Here is my step-by-step rundown:

1: I open the map. (This detail might be important: By the name of the map, it has the icon of the little globe but there's a gold-colored padlock on the left side of it. Don't know if this is important or not)
2: I edit something random (like, make the unit have 1 more max hp, or place an observer somewhere on the map)
3: I open SC using the ICCUP launcher.
4: Using Battle.net or Single Player, I launch the map.
5: The changes have not taken place. I saved the map, but the observer isn't there and the hero unit still has the same hp that I gave it 2 years ago.

So, I would like to ask some assistance, please! ^^

OKAY NEVERMIND
I JUST HAVE TO RUN THE MAP-EDITOR AS ADMINISTRATOR
I feel foolish now

Is your Starcraft installed somewhere like C:\Program Files\Starcraft...? Presumably you're running Windows Vista or 7 (8 is probably the same)?

In Windows Vista, Microsoft added a layer of protection to everything in the Program Files directory, to stop malware etc. So if your SC is installed there and you're trying to edit a map in one of the subdirectories, scmdraft will believe it is saving the file, and give you every impression that it is, but actually Windows will quarantine it somewhere out of the way. Then when you start SC, you see the original version of the file, not your edited one (which is actually stored somewhere else on the computer). Running scmdraft as administrator gets around it.

You may run into other problems though, like if you try to make backups or copies of the map, since it is still in the program file tree - on my old laptop with Vista I know that it similarly protected user-issued commands from windows explorer in the program files directory, which was super-annoying, but I think maybe Windows 7 doesn't do that (Microsoft really cleaned UAC up after their initial Vista implementation got so much flak for being naggy).

Long story short: edit your maps outside of the program files directory, or reinstall starcraft somewhere else on your PC.

Disabling UAC (User Account Control) avoids that problem.

inb4 'how do I do that?!?!??!!?!??!?!!?!!!??!?!?!??'

Yes, 'cause turning off security in your OS is a good idea.

Seriously, UAC in Windows 7 is really not that annoying.

I have UAC completely turned off and nothing bad has ever happened to my computer. I don't need to give myself permission to install a program that I know is secure. ;o

You may be missing the actual point of UAC. If you're just browsing the internet, and a UAC prompt comes apparently out of nowhere because some malware is trying to install itself on your PC from the infected website you're looking at, then the UAC prompt gives you a chance to stop it. If you don't have UAC, you'd have to rely on some other form of protection.

UAC has never popped up during web browsing, and Security Essentials is just as reliable as anything else, and free, and non-intrusive.

Keep dealing with annoying pop-ups every time you need to 'securely' access all the features of any given programme! :wob:
