[ StarEdit Rampage ]

Pity is for the weak; here, we play to win.

This is Rampage.

[ Introduction ]

In response to the demand for something better than a disorganized wreck, we bring you StarEdit's Rampage. A contest that will have you leave with blood on your face and a head for a trophy. Standards here are rigorous; we know what you're capable of, and we want you to prove it. This is THE StarEdit contest, and we will only bring you the best. We expect the same in return.

[ Judging ]

There are three levels of judges: senior judges, judges, and junior judges. Each carries its own responsibilities and privileges. There are high expectations for all judges, this is a serious contest. Once one becomes a judge, they keep the position until resignation or termination. Judges may participate in the judging process of any Rampage contest while holding the position. No judge may participate in a contest he or she is judging.

[ Junior Judge ]

Junior judges are the lowest rank of judge, but carry far less responsibility than regular or senior judges. These may be those who do not yet qualify for a higher position or those who need to keep a more flexible schedule. All junior judges are required to be present to help play multi-player maps at scheduled times, but are not required to submit scores. They are permitted to make individual suggestions on how to improve maps, and should be the first people to contact if one has a question pertaining the contest. All scores submitted by a junior judge have ½ weight when determining average scores.

[ Expectations and Responsibilities ]

  • Competency in all common mapping techniques, including a basic understanding of EUD/EPDs.
  • Attendance to multi-player judging functions.
  • The willingness to give and and assist to contestants who require help.
  • Make suggestions to contestants on how to improve maps and help them fit the theme.
  • A friendly attitude. Insulting or defaming contestants is strictly prohibited and will result in termination.

[ Judge ]

Regular judges carry all the responsibilities similar to previous contests. They must submit scores and are fully weighted in the average score calculation. They carry much more responsibility than junior judges, and require more time and effort, with higher expectations. They must submit scores within twenty-four hours of the last multi-player judging function. Any scores not received are not counted. Additionally, all judges who fail to submit scores on time will not be paid or receive participation for the contest.

[ Judge Expectations and Responsibilities ]

  • Competence in most mapping techniques. This includes EUD/EPDs
  • Attendance to all multi-player judging functions.
  • The willingness to give help should it be required. Judges may not make suggestions on how to improve maps.
  • A friendly attitude. Insulting or defaming contestants when is strictly prohibited and will result in termination.
  • Submission of scores within 24 hours of the last multi-player judging map function.

[ Senior Judge ]

A senior judge is primarily an administrative position. They may give help on the technical issues of a map, but they may not make suggestions on how to improve them. They must participate in three contests per group, and there must always be a senior judge participating in each contest. They participate in hiring and rule decisions. They are responsible for handing out/managing prizes and scores. They do not receive any sort of pay for working, it is strictly voluntary. Their scores are worth full weight, they do not receive any extra say in the judging decision.

[ Senior Judge Expectations and Responsibilities ]

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of mapping.
  • Good standing record of judging.
  • Understanding of all policies and guidelines of any Rampage contest.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts, attend and run all multi-player judging functions, distribute prizes, and create/manage contests.

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

You're awfully ambitious.

I'm guessing there will be more judges than actual contestants for each contest.

Perhaps. But senior judges will resolve over-staffing problems. If we have too many people exceptions can be made. It'll all be laid out in the judge's policies. Slow judging will not be tolerated. It's completely unfair to the contestants.

I like this idea, it makes entering a contest seem somewhat more appealing. I'm tempted to apply for a position as a Junior Judge, however I don't know how often I will be available to test maps. Looks like a good set of judging guidelines to me, only problem is see would be a lack of competent and committed Judges. I would love to see this take off. Good luck.

A single senior judge can run the show if need be. And since this is a contest of a more serious nature, expect a professional feel. Also, the minimum amount of time a contest group will occur is eight weeks. This means a junior judge must participate in a contest once every two months, at minimum.

I will be a regular judge.
*throws down gauntlet*

I have some ideas to make competitions more efficacious/fruitful as well, if you would hear them.
For starters, contestants should have to submit progress reports. Most contestants procrastinate and then find there is a week left and they've done nothing, and then they drop out. By forcing people to submit progress reports, people will be more inclined to do the work and have something to show for it, rather then saying "I've done nothing so far", or more inclined to drop out at the first progress report. Depending on length of contest, you would probably only need like two progress reports. They could be private (Judge/s only are given the PRs) or public, where the contestants could use the PRs to give everyone a teaser of what is to come, and to get feedback early and gain a chance to improve their end score (similiar to RL betas). They could be text, screenshots, or maps (first two can be faked easier).

Also I think the judging template should be changed as well but that is a more complicated matter that I prefer chatting about in SB/BNET.

All you're doing is describing Demon's contest. This series isn't a month long, it's two weeks at most, so that's not relevant. In most of the previous week-long contests, "most people" that planned on submitting an entry did submit an entry. The main reason activity dropped was because the judges wouldn't judge the maps for months.

And, since contestants aren't required to state they are making a map before they submit one to the contest, and some begin working on their maps significantly later than others, considering the implementation of required progress reports is fairly ludicrous.

The best way to foster participation is not to institute policies that pointlessly increase the workload of entrants, but rather to make the experience rewarding enough that people want to finish. I believe that is Sacrieur's intention in making a contest series that is actually organized and professional.

Azrael would be correct. The last thing we want to do is slap more handcuffs on the people participating. The problem isn't that people are getting lazy, it's that people get too ambitious. The key is to keeping the contest small enough so that someone with a full time job could submit an entry and receive a C rank without it eating up their life in the mean time.

The handcuffs are really slapped on judges, who should be held accountable for completing their work on time. It's unfair to the contestants if they don't.

So these are only short contests, fair enough. Btw I dont know if this is just me but I can't see where the contest info is???

SEN Username: This category is stupid.

Desired Position: Regular Judge

Approximate years of mapping experience: Like 2 years after SC1 came out.

Qualifications and achievements: (Please source claims.) I type over 120wpm, I got A's in English, I was PR Manager for www.frenetic-array.com for 3 years. I released v 1.0 of Hell's Awakening RPG and working on version v1.1.

Why you would make a good judge: Coz of what I said above. Also I am aware of how bias works cause I study psychology, and because I regularly debate religious drones.

I don't think requiring judging to be finished within a reasonable time frame should be considered "making it hard," and it surely will make things better.

Oh, and I didn't know if I was supposed to include stuff about my writing abilities or comprehension or any of that stuff because it seemed rudimentary.

Edit: yay

Nah, wasn't really too interested in that stuff. I mean you were supposed to send your application via email, not just post it on the thread.
