Back* from the grave

So, SEN, my computer fails to recognize that it has a microphone in the jack. Through the "listen to this device" feature, I found that the laptop is using something completely bogus, because when I have my mic plugged in, the only sounds it ever registers is stuff like hitting the laptop case. It refuses to switch to my earpiece, no matter how I try to force it to do it. When I unplug it, it utilizes my shitty ass laptop mic. In case you're wondering, yes, I am on Windows 7. Also, since I was home this weekend, I tried plugging it into my desktop, with the same exact result...

driver error or bad hardware methinks. Or you don't have it set up correctly in the sound control panel.

Do you have or can you get a USB headset or something instead? I've had tons of issues with plug in mics like that and just gave up on them.

I feel like we can give you the usual "Are you sure it is set to the default device?" advice, but you're most likely well beyond that. I suppose drivers could be the issue, though if it doesn't work on either your desktop or laptop, it may just be the mic or mic's connector.

Bastard was working perfectly fine, no driver updates or anything. I was thinking it's the connector, but it's almost spotless. As far as the Default Device crap...yeah I'd say I'm a little past that because I had it set as the default communications device, I have no specified default device, and from what I was told that's supposedly impossible to do. Yeah, I tried setting it as the default, and it didn't work, so I ended up setting it back earlier today anyways.

I'll see what I can do as far as finding a good USB then. Since it worked once, I didn't change or update anything, and now it's borked, my bet is it wont work ever again. Odd considering the speaker works perfectly fine.

You can set a microphone to Default Device under the "Recording" tab of the sound panel.

I know. But how to set it to the Default Communications Device with no other device?

Enable the "Stereo Mix," then right click the mic and select "Set as Default Device." It lets me do both Default Device and Default Communication Device on the same thing.

Ok, it's supposedly impossible to have one piece of hardware and have it not be the default device. I somehow managed to a long ass time ago, and I haven't bothered to fix. I set it back as both types of default, and it didn't change anything as far as mic messing up, so I changed it back.

EDIT: Wait, what do you mean "ask how to do it"? I never asked how to make it the default device, I just want the little bitch to work :wut:

Also, I think this might've been missed earlier...but thinking about it I kinda think there's something weird. Inserting the mic makes the computer turn on some internal microphone. When I tap the case, even lightly, it registers. Snapping my fingers as loud as I can, both by my mic and my laptop's mic (next to the webcam) registers either next to nothing at all.

That's what I was responding to.

Oh, I was making a mockery of how you first say that I probably don't need to be told to make it the default device, then say that I need to make it the default device. My bad.

I was initially responding to the part about being told it was impossible to do so.

I strongly suggest that you take into consideration that I spent the entire fucking weekend either playing games or trying to fix my mic. Seriously, at least the "Default Device" shit wasn't something that everyone that has a computer knows how to do. "Go to SEN!" is not my first thought when something goes wrong.
