If you had to spend 12,500 Dark Matter on a +10% mining bonus for a week. You'd rather have this bonus when your total mines are earning 1,000,000 per hour, than in the beginning of the game when your homeworld mines are earning 500 per hour total. You follow?
Your logic is flawed. 10% of your production is 10% of your production regardless. At the early stage in the game, a 10% extra resource boost will benefit you in exactly the same way that a 10% extra resource boost will in late game. Buildings cost less in the beginning, and more in the end. YOU follow?

I don't use defences or turrets. I fleet save.
Since I still attend high school and have a job, I found it very difficult to stay on top of my fleeting game. This time around, I thought I'd try a new strategy, turtling. Therefore, I need defense, and as a result, Engineer is highly beneficial. Plus that 10% energy boost helps you to churn out the mines a tad earlier helping out in the long run.

Defenses aren't as good as you think. It's hard to expand with defender, and you constantly need Anti-planetary missiles on every single planet to keep your competitiveness intact. It's because of the fact that Interplanetary missiles just smash defenses to the bone. If you are defender, don't get lasers. Get like 5000 missile launchers, a large shield generator, and from plasma/gauss in the quantity of 50, once you become in range from bombers and battleships.

Everyone hates a turtle. By building defences you just taunt players into wanting to crash you with IPMs. They'll see your 100k+ deuterium stock piled and realise you don't play very often. They'll be happy to set up another planet nearby to you, scan you every now and then, stockpile IPMs and then just blast your defences. Once they've missile-attacked you, you become a farm and may as well become inactive.

The simple thing is, by investing in defences, you don't invest in mines or fleet. And it's mines and fleets which increase your income.

Well, yeah I guess if you want to turtle due to RL that's fine. I have a hectic RL at the moment, and it's pretty easy just to fleet save, farm a few inactives and maybe scan a couple people - time permitting.

A general rule of thumb, only build as many defences as to protect your over-night production quota. Unless of course, you are going to be a turtle. 90% of your unspent resources should be sent onboard your fleet, and the 10% that is produced from then until you next sign on will be vulnerable to attacks. So, obviously in the later game, you'll want to invest more heavily in defence.

Cruisers tear through missile launchers. whereas Destroyers will annihilate Light Lasers. By the time you can afford to invest heavily in Heavy Lasers as your fodder, Bombers are already common. Long story short, due to the nature of the oGame universe, there will always be someone bigger than you out there. All defence does is deter certain attackers.

Edit 1: Also, attackers have the advantage of choosing their fleet composition. Once you've invested in your planetary defences, they are susceptible to anyone who scans you. So, for this reason alone, attackers always have the upper hand. If your defence is rocket launcher heavy, they will send a cruiser-heavy fleet to attack it. If your defence has few anti ballistic missiles, they will bide their time and stockpile interplanetary missiles. If your defence is full of gauss turrets+ they will send battleships and fodder. For everything else, there's Death Stars and Bombers. The idea of defence in oGame is a false economy ;). The best thing you can do is to make yourself an unattractive target - through spending your resources and fleetsaving. That way, anyone who wants to attack you - will end up spending more deuterium than they will gain.

Edit 2: As you can probably tell... I hate turtles!

I don't know the exact mechanics, but I'd assume 12k Dark Matter are much harder to come by in the early stages of the game. So the benefit is still 10%, yes, but the cost is relatively higher.

Pretty much, yeah. You can only really get Dark Matter by buying it. You can find it in expeditions or pimp your soul to the sponsors to get some more - but these methods take time and patience. So, sure, if you have $100 lying around to go spend on a free online game - by all means do so :)...

Back* from the grave

I have 48,606 from mostly one offer, even after spending 7k to trade resources. My favorite are the ones that have you install shit for IE, when nobody here uses IE. Takes roughly 5 minutes, then an hour or so later you get a nice little bit of DM.

Stop getting dark matter on a server w/ people that will own you guys even with 10,000,000 dark matter :/

Why not? I mean, it's not like we're paying for it. Why not make things a little easier on ourselves when we can? People are going to own us anyways, they've had however long to snowball fleets up.

Feb 7 2011, 1:27 pm BeDazed Post #69

Well, for one. If you're going to spend money, I don't recommend it. For two, expeditions suck early on, and fleets are better used raiding other players.

EDIT:: If you already have dark matter, atleast use it when you have more than 3 planets running level 18 mines/synthesizers.
Also. Currently sending 3 small cargoes to an inactive... v_v please let it be undefended.

Espionage?

First colony set up, in the 9 slot, and it's got 207 spots. Me gusta. Coordinates: [2:227:9]

Espionage is a tad higher level then cargoes. Fortunately, it was undefended and I got away with fair amounts of resources.

Mmm... I found a delicious inactive farm world that ranks 900something but with no defenses.

EDIT::
The attacker has won the battle!
Loot : 11.700 Metal, 2.590 Crystal and 675 Deuterium.
debris field : 0 metal and 0 crystal.
Repaired : ?

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

The alliance rank. Probably because poison didn't see you below 3000. Pretty much everyone should be Regular by now.

Lol.

I spend all my resources on mines, small cargoes, 9 probes, impulse technology to level 5, and colony ships/astrophysics. Until I start earning 100k metal/80k crystal/20k deuterium an hour. Then I start making ships ;)

Edit: Some people delay their first colonisation until they have 3 or 4 colony ships and enough Astrophyiscs research to support 3 or 4 colonies. They then send them out all at once. Because you are rewarded with 3 days of the Commander perk as soon as you make your first colony, but the bonus applies to all your colonies. It's pretty much up to personal preference though.

This. Haven't had much time online to sit and do that. In fact right now I should've left for class 3 minutes ago. Will update whenever I get around to that.

I prefer teching straight to large cargoes though. Much easier farming off inactives.
