According to an article on the Wall Street Journal (registration required), Activision Blizzard has spent a whopping $100 million developing their RTS sequel Starcraft 2.

The $100 million has so far been sunk into the development of the game and does not include any marketing activities. Blizzard is banking on the success of Starcraft 2 and the development resource that has been pumped into the new Battle.Net system. Blizzard are hoping that by offering an integrated Battle.Net across all their titles, gamers playing World of Warcraft will pick up a copy of Starcraft 2 which will help drive sales. Speaking to the paper, Blizzard’s Mike Morhaime added:

“We’ve brought in a lot of new players in the beta testing who’ve been playing World of Warcraft but have never tried Starcraft,”

With Starcraft 2 coming out in three parts, Wings of Liberty being the first on 27 July, they are likely to easily recoup their costs. With StarCraft being such a massive franchise in South Korea, Blizzard will be well on their way to making a success of the sequel and the sales will come flooding in.

This really explains why they split it into 3 games - $100m is insane.

WoW generates somewhere inbetween 120 mil and 150 mil PER MONTH. That's nothing for blizzard.

That's not even 100% of their income, they still make tons off of all their game sales.

10 million users and $12-$15 per month gives them this income.

Hello

this is madness... but what is the average developing cost of a game like starcraft?

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

Also consider they have about 1500 GMs employed working 24 hours a day for just WoW. Their design teams per game are massive as well.

So even though they make a ton monthly on WoW, economically speaking they're not making $140 million in pure profit.

These sweeping numbers are really misleading. Look at the infrastructure that supported hundreds of millions of players in wow - bnet has to work with all of that in order for it to be their next generation platform.

Turns out this was a big mistake by the Wall Street Journal. The $100m figure actually applies to WoW, not SC2. So all of you guys saying "$100m isn't much for SC2" really have egg on your faces now.

This isn't that bad. It's $100 million for the ENTIRE franchise. So it's only around $33 million per game. :P

Also, IIRC, they havent finished the second and third expansion yet. So that 100 mil could grow to 150/200 million depending on how much it costs to create a campaign and maybe add in new units.

Um, I'm guessing Demon and Pebbles simply didn't read my post?

I'll make it a bit clearer:
Wall Street Journal made a mistake, $100m is for WoW development costs, not SC2!
