This is a question that has been bothering me for a long time. If you were to have a completely different map than say a game hoster, but the map had the exact same filename (e.g.
mapname.scm) would the hoster's
mapname.scm overwrite your original
mapname.scm after you downloaded it from the game hoster?
We are assuming both
mapname.scm's are completely different maps, but are in the hoster's and my own '
maps/download' folder respectively, where all downloads go.
Sorry if this sounds confusing but it is the best way I can describe such a situation. I believe it does overwrite it because I have yet to see a way Starcraft is able to differentiate between them (i.e. Windows appends a (1) or (2) etc.. after a filename that you copy/paste into the same folder if the folder has the same identical filename).
None.
yes, sort your maps into different folders if you don't want them to be overwritten. My downloads folder usually only has maybe 12 files in it.

lol.. I have about 3000 maps in my downloads folder, earliest dates back to 2001, when my hd was erased.
The new map will over ride the old map. This is why some people end up dling the same map multiple times - the other maps are different versions/mods with the same file name.

I completely reorganized my entire folder system a few months ago, and it's working out very well so far. Whenever I get maps in my download folder, I'll eventually move them to where they belong, and my download folder is empty.
FFP, 3000 maps? You won't be able to access 90% of them - SC can only display the first ~250 or so maps. Anything below those will be unaccessable from the 'create game' interface. Did you know this already and do you not care, or were you ignorant and looking for an explanation?
None.

In multiplayer you can. My download folder also has over 3k maps and I can host every one of them. If I need to host a specific map in single player I copy it to a dedicated folder.
I have pretty much every map from Renaka and they are sorted nicely into subfolders, meaning single player hosting is not a problem. I seldom need map downloading so my downloads folder only has about 1200 entries.

I actually have 3694 maps (and I had ~2000 deleted). And in single player, my map lists only go to the "C"s. I always put my test maps, popular maps, and in progress maps in the "brood war" folder, since you start in that folder.
I almost never play single player as many triggers are slow/annoying, like centering the screen.

I would assume single player means you play the map alone on multiplayer.
