EUDs?

I've heard plenty of mappers say that EUDs are totally off limits and to quote one "Real mappers dont use EUDs"

What are your opinions and why?

My opinion is that EUDs should be used to a certain extent to add flavor to a map, but using them as near every single trigger is just ridiculous. Using EUDs to detect when a person fires to play a wav adds a lot of fun and flavor especially if you have good wavs. Another example and idea I had was in maps a lot of the time people have "gas tanks" that explode when shot, but they have no way of making more. Rather than doing this, one could simply detect when the gas tank doesn't have 100% HP, set it to 100%, move the gas tank to a holding position, and then show an explosion at its previous position.
PS: You could also give the gas tank 10k shields so that it had no health shown making it more professional looking.

real mappers accept that there are some things which are difficult to do. Instead of trying to make starcraft do what you want, you do what you can within starcraft's limitations.

EUDs are most of the time infeasible, which is why so few maps use them. Since EUD actions are patched, that means that a lot of the power they once had is nullified.

A lot of times, there is a much easier way to achieve your goal without using EUDs. Of course, sometimes a single EUD trigger can accomplish what 2000 true triggers were designed to do.

In all honesty, sometimes EUD's are more of a hassle than a timesaver. Only if you already know exactly what you want to do and you are 99% sure there isn't an easier way to do it is when EUD's are more useful. But now that Blizzard isn't really patching starcraft anymore (or at least for a long time), I think EUD's are a lot more viable.

None.

SDE, BWAPI owner, hacker.

You can make any condition possible, but at the same time you're putting limits on your map. Good mappers will make their maps available to anyone at any time. This includes having their maps work correctly for both Windows machines and Macs, and still work after a patch.

Also, having EUDs don't necessarily make your map more fun or creative, so keep that in mind.
