Hey guys, I am trying to reduce the size of a wav file. I am using Audacity to reduce the bit rate, but every time I try and try it, it changes the sound to something completely different? How do you reduce the quality without drastically affecting how the file sounds? It's just not working for me. Six seconds shouldn't take 500+kbs right? I'm just trying to understand how other people did it because I've seen maps with sounds I tried to compress myself and it just doesn't turn out right.

File link: wav sound

Yes I already read various posts about that. I am just asking if there is a better way of compressing this particular file. One person on SEN compressed a file from 20 mb to 300kb so I am wondering how the hell he did that while still letting sc use it. I know you have to manipulate and bit rates and all, I just can't get it to work right. The original file of the sound I'm working on was 5 mb.

In your case lower the sample rate. I think for this simple piece of music 8kHz should be fine.
It currently is 44kHz, so this should reduce file size to under 150kb.

Reducing the bits won't do any good since sc usually compresses 16Bit files better than 8Bit ones. Leave it at 16 Bit.

I've tried setting it to 8khz but it completely distorts the sound. Is there another way to do this?

No.
Well except from using higher sample rates. But 44kHz is definitely overkill.

Thank you rockz. Could you please tell me which program you used to get this? I've tried it back and forth with Audacity changing different settings, bit rates, from stereo to mono. In the end, I still couldn't get it down to that size. Whenever I changed it to 8 or 11khz, it would change the music completely and extend the length from 6 seconds to 25 seconds? Did I miss a setting, or do I have to add effects in?

Bottom left, project rate, set it to 11025 Hz. Under the sample rate, set that to 16 bit, or in the preferences, change it to 16 bit. If you change the track sample rate, it will speed it up/slow it down.
