Based on the $69 billion DoE budget and 300 million people, each person pays ~$230 annually to provide for the education system. This would probably include food for those with financial difficulties, and the education system doesn't, on the whole, descriminate based on financial status. It's a steal. Assuming that ffg comes from a family of three, his entire family is paying $700 for his education, whereas according to
this website, the average private school tuition would be $6600 annually over twelve years.
Schools are primarily paid for by state taxes.
New York has a population of approximately 19,541,453. The state government spent $18 billion on school aid
1. This comes out to an additional $900 per year per person.
Schools are also partly paid for by municipal taxes. New York City has 8.4 million residents. The city's budget for the Department of Education was $17,755,690,409
2. This comes out to $2122.94 per person.
Since the state and federal portions pay to the city's DoE, this final number is probably closer to the
total paid per year. Still, it's a lot more than your $230.

Hrrm. I should've known that. That makes me wrong.
According to
this Minnesota budget document, 23.7% of $60.15 billion is used on education in a state with 5.2 million people, bringing the education cost per capita to $2730. In a family of three, that'd be $8190 annually, which is larger than the $6600 charged by private schools. I hate being owned. <_<. I still think that sueing the system is a nasty thing to do, but apparently he's not getting a deal under the current system.
None.
Keep in mind that since the rich pay a higher proportion of taxes than the poor, the poor are still getting their money's worth. Interestingly enough, the majority of New York City's income comes from property taxes rather than income or business taxes.
Apparently the state pays the city 8.5 billion in education-only grants, and the federal government pays 1.8 billion.
I think
this is a better estimate ($2040 per person per year)

Yeah, I still think that most people here are paying less than a private school is worth, and there are still many private schools which are below the $6600 mark in tuition. Still, considering the difference in performance of public vs private schools, it's much weaker a point than it was when I thought it was $233 per person, which was in retrospect a rather nonsensical number.
