The detection range is limited, you still need to build a few of them to cover your entire base just as you would Missile Turrets, this is what upsets me. You're going to need to build both sensor towers AND missile turrets now instead of just missile turrets to accomplish the kind of coverage and AA Terrans normally have.

The range appears to be about triple that of a Missile turret.
That means there's 9 times the area covered by a Tower as there is by a turret. Besides this, there's a great advantage in the enemy not being able to rush kill your defense. With turrets, cloaked wraiths could descend upon and kill a single turret very quickly, leaving the rest of the base open. With this, they would have to rush through entire layers of enemy defense before even getting to the detection point.
Plus, the cost of missile turrets and towers will probably be balanced to make it more or less the same cost-wise.

Its not a problem of tech tree, its a problem of utility.
And so far I see NO problem with it. Terrans are a native anti-air attackers because their units mostly can, unlike the protoss units which weren't very versatile as the terran was. Terrans natively also have comsat stations, which is a highly valuable detection capability as well as a powerful scouting capability. And besides, Terrans also have science vessels as their mobile detectors later in their tech tree.

If you have problems with that, then you must have trouble collecting minerals while you play, don't you?

I'm talking about detection range, not Radar.

Comsat are used for scouting like Zergs Overlords and Protosses Observers. And Science Vessels are only used against Zerg, it would be an expensive and worthless investment vs Toss or another Terran player.

I have no problems expanding ten times, I do have issues with building almost 2x the amount of buildings I normally need. That takes time away from something else I could be doing and space away from my base.

First statement: Who says they can't detect cloaked units within radar range? Give me a source. And while you're at it, show me where Blizzard says the turrets won't detect.

Second Statement: You need to take the game as it comes. I bet you play fastests, don't you? You're that kind of person. "I don't like expanding" "I don't like Dark Templars" etc.
This is how Blizzard is making the game; and I'm sure they'll do a fine job of it in the end. We all have things that, when in game, we wish were/weren't there; but if they were, the game would not be fair.

In conclusion, quit your whining and go play a fastest.

All i can say, is that this prety much defeats trying to nuke a terran base... I still like the idea though..

Why? There are detectors in SC1... turrets, comsat, vessels. If you're getting nuked you'd scan around your base, and most likely find the ghost.

Can the Radar Tower also detect invisible units even in Fog of War?

No. On the other hand, Sensor Arrays and Radar Towers do allow all Missile Turrets in its range to also detect invisible units within those Missile Turrets range.

Source: http://www.battle.net/forums/thread.aspx?fn=sc2-general&t=1&p=1&#post1

Also, in the Terran Gameplay video you can see an upgraded Radar Tower and the small detection range is still shown.

And second, yes of course I play fastest, who doesn't play in this game speed? I don't know a single person in battle net who doesn't play melee maps in fastest speed, actually. And I expand like a mad man, its the only way to fuel everything I do to win. And no I don't complain about Dark Templars, they're usually dead before they can touch a single unit or building.

Also, you sound like a Toss player, maybe you should play Terran and Zerg sometime to see what their dependencies are and you would understand game balance a little more. It won't kill you to learn their weaknesses instead of just knowing how to counter their strats.

EDIT: Oh you meant fastests like the 500000 mineral fields right next to a CC? LOL if I had that sort of free easy income I wouldn't give a crap about having to shell out extra money on those buildings. Hell with that kind of money I could have a fleet of Science Vessels if I really wanted. And hell no I don't play those trash maps.

These discussions are pretty fucking pointless. If anything in the game is actually stupid or imbalanced it is going to get changed before release or in a patch. It isn't like they're going to leave some huge fucking gaping hole in balance. You should however expect the game to be horribly imbalanced upon release though. Go check out some of the original StarCraft patches. I think 1.04 does NOTHING but nerf every single Zerg unit and buff every single Terran / Protoss unit. Its fucking hilarious how awful 1.00 was. Rigged to shit.

For your information, I play all three races, and Protoss and Terran tie for my favorites. I know pluses and minuses of all the races. I know what things mess up noobs and what kind of strategies pros use.

Based on the link you gave, the Sensor Towers will be even more reasonable. Forget detecting within tower range, it's tower range plus one turret. That's about 4 times the range, 16 times the area detected. Just build two or three and surround them with missile turrets.
I can see why Blizzard would do this, at 75 minerals a tower, Terrans have detection and AA pretty easy.

Sorry, Didnt read all posts but:

Missile Towers no longer have detection THATS WHY SENSOR TOWERS ARE THERE

Because Missile Towers now function solely as an anti-air weapon, they have been given slightly more power at the sacrifice of detection

The sensor tower (upgraded into or from a radar tower) shows the player with a red mark an invisible unit. To my knowledge, it serves as a targeting point for units. Yes, it may go beyond the point of FoW but this is only to counter act with the new protoss abilities.

For example, Missile Turret is striped of its Detection, but is stronger
Sensor tower is made to detect units to warn the Terran player
Warp Gates warp protoss units in to nearby war fronts
DTs are now slightly faster and less visable
Zealots have charge, decimating towers easily. THEY ALL BALANCE OUT

And if they dont, Blizzard will just patch it up

they have detection, units outside visibility range are marked red.

Nov 18 2007, 9:03 pm Hynk Post #33

Also, a note with the Sensor Tower. If can detect units in the fog of war, but it does not notify what units they are. The play will only know whenl the units are within VISIBLE range, meaning NOT in the fog of war. All the player will know are merely the number of units that are coming and where they are.

Terran VS Toss = EMP?
Terran VS Terran = EMP (kill cloak, and detect and iraditate. Also, the shields were useful against heavy weapons like BCs and tanks).

I think the sensor tower makes sense. Cause why would a Missle Turret see cloaked units? I can understand it seeing flying cloaked cause it is automatic but ground cloak? And im sure Blizzard is gonna balance it all out

Wow way to revive an old thread. Anyway right now the radar tower thing comes built already in the sensor tower, making it suck much less.
