Many vHP systems use a burrowed zergling, so that the enemy attacks the zergling and when it dies you subract a death, and once that death hits 0 you kill the person's unit. Others are completely virtual, where even the enemies attack you virtually, it depends on what system you want.

My system would be a system where you have armor and hp, when the armor(vHP) is gone you will start to lose hp(Unit health)

Okay, so you can still use the zergling one, just have a certain amount of zerglings be armor, and once they run out you move on to health.

Having a couple of zerglings following burrowed under a unit would cause major lag while the unit is walking though.

You can make it so that they only move to it when it exits a tiny location on it.

I know,...

OH GREAT IDEA: If armor lags a bit (zergling dies and next one is late) it will be like Doom3 where armor just reduces damage to health!!! REALISTICNESS

If you want something like that, you can use upgrades, or if you want to be able to take armor away, use shields and constantly set them to the level of armor.

If you want help on how to make a deathcounter appear analog style on the bottom of your map I can tell you, and you can do it with about 4 trigs and 10trigs/digit/player.

Just a random guy

It's a bit more difficult if you want to add lings as armors. Make sure your burrowed ling has ALOT more attack power than you.. Make those burrowed ling follow you. When they're dead, you'll have normal HP.

Well it also depends on how many players are gonna have the vHP system. As I learnt from my map with a vHP some of the ways you do it you need each player to use different vHP units in order for the vHP to be less buggy. If you want meet me on east and ill let you see my map and you can get what info you might need from it.

You could probably just use protoss shields for that "armor".

Or you could use a resource or custom score.

And how would you detect when the unit is hit to remove the resource or custom score? Armor is the easiest and best way to go.
