DOTA Question

Ok, so I'm going to be in a contest at school with prizes, and the game is dota allstars. Now I've played the game a few times before, but I'm nhot sure about one thing.

So I picked the old bearded sniper guy. When I micro him like I would a sc unit, I can't tell if my attack ever connects. Like with vultures i can still be facing the other direction when I fire, but I know it hits because I see the projectile connect. In WC3 when I do the same thing, I see my unit fire, but still facing a diffrent direction. I'm not sure if my shot missed. My fav thing about sc is that every shot connects(nvm hills), but the way the graphics make it look - WC3 seems like units can miss frequently like In Command and Conquer. Still, I haven't had a chance to see if the unit's health decreased when I tried this(I don't have it so I can't just check).
I guess all I need to know is if it's just a visual thing, and the enemy still takes damage.

Also, any dota tips in general would be appreciated as well, I have until 9pm tommorow to be a pro.

On a side note, does anyone know where to find the original Aeon of Strife starcraft map that DotA was based on?

Okay, now go back to answering CAFG's question.

If your going with the ranged unit get a little speed items then agility of course. The sniper should target weaker units from afar and use a hit and run kind of strategy. His ultimate if its still the bomb use it as a nuke in defense or siege. He should have good dmg once lvl 10, have him mostly defend and horde gold until he has the ability to hero kill properly (tons of dmg). The snipers number 1 priority should be lane defense because he can chip away at heros and he has good dmg. Uh what else you have to ask?

speed= unit movement while agility = unit attack speed?

Wouldn't I focus on buying things that increase my damage since I'm going to be hanging back? Wouldn't a melee unit want the speed?

Also, there's also all these fusion items. Are they worth it? I'd like to know exactly what I should be buying.

Wait a second dude, you nenver told me if you can miss or not, or if damage is calculated if the attack animation isn't finished.

I've played a bit DotA the past years and I've noticed that if you rush towards the enemy at an early stage, you die. You're better off hiding behind one of your towers and grind the enemy creeps that comes to you.
If you see that a large amount of friendly creeps have managed to gather, follow them and help them till there's like 2-3 left, then retreat.
If an enemy tower starts shooting at you, retreat so it finds another target before you engage again.
If you get below 30-40% HP, retreat and recover.

The map is pretty much just playing cowardly in the early phase, building up your character.

Watching replays might also help: http://www.gosugamers.net/dota/replays/

Because your hero dies too fast at start even to creeps. Dying will deduce your gold, and put you behind in exp by a ton. (At start, a level or two.) That also means giving them gold too. A good tip is to have a potion, and later in game a chicken to do your bidding. Also, since you're sniper, kill your allied creeps when they drop in health ( like very low ) before the enemy kills it. It helps slow their leveling. Snipe low health enemy creeps when they are low, that helps your gold go up. It's no use letting the CPU have the gold.

My build on the Dwarven Sniper. First ability should be headshot, second ability should be take aim. That should increase your damage and range. Your strategy is to hit your enemy whenever it gets close. The Dwarven sniper has a reputation for having the longest range in its attack arsenal. When you first receive your golds, you need to buy something right? Get Ring of Regeneration, Slippers of Agility, Flask of Sapphire Water, and Clarity Potion. One each. Becareful, the two potions you use regenerate on a timely basis, and if you get hit, they will stop healing.

Don't get scatter shot until you max out headshot and take aim. Get your ultimate as soon as you can. Once you make your opponent go heal, you go heal and get Boots of Speed. Go for Power Treads. Once you have your Power Treads, you'll have increased health, speed, and attack speed. And so on. Later when you get Skadi, get Boots of Travel, sell Power Treads and buy a hyperstone.

Dwarf has low health. you need speed because the other team will target you for nuke first (or other ranged units) you micro and stay out of nuke range while still chipping away at health.

To answer the original question about Warcraft game mechanics, if the projectile animation is away for most units (those with a weapon behavior of seeking the target), then it will hit the target unless there is a height difference, in which case a miss will be indicated by the huge red letters "miss".

As for strategy, Sniper needs to abuse his incredibly short attack animation sequence. Micro and deny like crazy, and get scattershot with clarity potions for farming. I usually get headshot later than some people simple because Sniper already has the attack anim to last hit so the extra damage isn't really necessary as you won't be harassing much until later.

Items? Definitely a Stygian Desolator; everyone agrees. Farm quickly and stay out of harm's way, because the Sniper has shitty IMS (290) and virtually no HP to speak of. Whatever you do, don't go out to the creep line just to try to piss off your opposite in the lane. Nothing sucks more than getting run down and killed because your IMS is 10 less than your opponent's.

I played a ton of DotA before my graphics card started falling apart; I haven't really played since 6.49.

If you want more opinions, read a guide, like this one.

I wish you guys saw this and posted this stuff earlier.

I got 5th. I lost the first round where we picked (sniper). Second round I apparently lucked out and got the best character according to everyone (Some fiery red orc looking staff guy, he had this spell that would deal damage over a period of time, usually killing them before they could run back and heal. he was rape.)

Anyways I always went power treads - yasha - sange - and If I could make it the sange+yasha thing. The crazy open game play these items give is prompting me to reinstall WC3 and try my hand at it.

I play DotA everyday and I can sometimes be the best... then sometimes the worst.

I primarily like to play with Spectre, Dark Seer or any nuke-based unit. I usually go for something that will enable high DPS (damage per second) while keeping it helpful for more than that and let the unit go all out.

If you wanted to play with Sniper, I would have suggested a Mask of Madness, Treads and Lothar's Edge as your early game build. If the game lasts longer than that, add a Butterfly, Sange+Yasha and Buriza. This would make you not only have good Survivability, but also increase your DPS through the roof.

Mask of Madness not only gives you lifesteal, but can increase your attack and movement speed for relatively no mana and has a short cooldown. Then you have Treads, the basic item that will make you better all round. Then Lothar's Edge gives you extra damage plus Wind Walk with is amazingly handy.

Butterfly is the best all-round item a ranged Agility-based unit like the Sniper can get. It makes enemies miss attacks, increases his attack speed and increases his damage. Sange+Yasha will increase your health, your attack speed, your damage and your movement speed. It's orb will be overridden by Mask of Madness, but thats all good. Then Buriza, one of the best items around, will allow you to dish out damage like crazy. It gives additional damage and a critical, so with all of your increased attack speed, you shouldn't have a problem dealing criticals often.

That, in my opinion, is a good Sniper build. Even though I have never actually sat down and played him myself. As for his abilities, I would get his range and scatter first. Since his ult isn't crap, always level it ASAP.
