Repeating Sound Files

I'm having a problem with repeating sound files. Specifically, it's the file named 'radio' in my map. The effect seems to be random as sometimes it repeats and sometimes it doesn't. I think it was caused when I tried to replace that file as that's when the problem first started. I already tried to remove and re-add the file and affected actions but it hasn't worked.

You can find the triggers with the play wav under force 1. They are uncommented.

Just here for the pie

This happens when a sound file is too short. If you pad the end of it with nothing, you should find that it won't repeat anymore.

Thanks. How long does it have to be?

Math + Physics + StarCraft = Zoan

But I recently noticed, it's only the sounds less than 1 second long that repeat. There is one that's 1.6 seconds, that I can't get to repeat in the StarEdit test player at all, and a 6.66 second one that never repeats at all. There is also a 1.00 second sound that repeats a tiny protion of itself at the end

Thanks! Unfortunately this increases my file size by a lot. Guess there's no way around it.

Personally I've experienced the repeating sound issue with all of the sound files except radio2, which is Mono, 11025Hz. :omfg:
As far as I can tell, mono sounds that have a 32000 Hz rate or lower never have that problem. So if you don't mind a slightly lower sound quality, you could look into that. On the plus side, you do get a much smaller file size for your map!

I converted your sounds into Mono, 32000Hz and they don't seem to be repeating anymore. You can download them here if you would like to have them, or just the radio one if it's really the only one you have a problem with. ^^

I'm guessing here, but sounds like two possible problems.

A) There's a bug in SC's sound playing code or possibly the editor itself. Try tweaking the Hz of your sound, use mono sounds. DarkenedFantasies seems to have some working suggestions. Like he said, the lower your rate the smaller the file. Generally 48k or higher is considered perfect, but going lower will not likely make the sounds much worse. This can also drastically make the sound file smaller.

B) There's a bug in the map editor's code somewhere involved with replacing or deleting sounds. Perhaps the sound length of your new sound is still set to the length of the old sound. This may cause the difference in lengths to fill-in a repeat (as opposed to leaving it empty). If this is the case try using winmpq to manually remove the sound from your map, then go ahead and add it back in with the editor. Idea from rockz in the thread Zoan linked.

Either way it looks like there's a code bug somewhere, so we have to tweak things to get it working and just live with it.

But... every sound file have decreased in size. :| Aren't you confusing the radio.wav and radio2.wav files? radio2.wav was already mono/11025Hz and didn't need to be changed.

Sorry I think I ninja edited you. You're right about radio and radio2 :)

A tad irrelevant, but nobody should mind large filesizes for maps anymore. Almost everyone who plays on battle.net uses discord or some other third-party group chat software to organise events, which means maps are generally downloaded outside of battle.net. And for singleplayer maps, such as campaigns, I'm currently working on a set that will likely be close to a gigabyte in total map size, so the precedent has already been set for large map sizes. It won't (or at least, shouldn't) cause problems for you.

huh? So going online and playing with strangers or getting a map out into the public isn't a thing anymore?

What strangers/public is there to play with? The pro scene is the biggest thing about BW these days, UMS died off a long time ago so most people just use the various discords and forums that have survived the test of time.

Plenty of people still play maps publicly. A single player campaign is completely different because it's not meant to be downloaded through Battle.net.

Whilst not worrying about file size would be great, I'd also like the map to be played by as many people as possible. Working within limitations offers its challenges as well.

ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

If we're being real, pretty much nobody except people on SEN will play it, which means you can put it on the dldb and people can download it from there. I mean, yeah, you may get a few pubs to play it, but most of the people will be from here, so I wouldn't worry if the map is a couple mbs or something.

That's what I thought about Desert Strike :P

What I mean is, never discourage someone from believing in their map.
