So i just went to change my skin settings, because the default (white text on dark background) is murder on my eyes.
idk maybe i'm getting old, but everytime i get off the computer after being on SEN for an hour or so i can't see anything beyond 2 ft clearly at all

That's funny, I would have assumed that a light background with dark text would hurt more eyes. I guess it depends on the size of your computer screen, but I can't deal with anything too bright because I'm at a desktop computer.
I think the staff is usually pretty open to people who want to create new skins if you're so inclined...though I'd wait to hear for sure from one of the admins or one of the developers.
In the meantime, you might try Carbonite - it is still light text on a dark background, but it isn't as bad as say, Epic (which I use). Might also try Maplantis.
You can also try greasemonkeying in a new font color and background.

Yeah. A site I used to frequent switched to that, and I had to stop going there because it was such an eyesore.
There's nothing wrong with the current skin selection, but if someone feels otherwise then they can always make a new one to be added.
You could also invert screen colors if you're on a (moose forbid) mac.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure a light background with dark text would be much, much worse. The suggested SFW skin idea from long ago would probably have been something similar, I imagine. Unfortunately it was never made.

Two things I can recommend to help ease your eyes:
1.) Never use your computer in a dark lit room. If you do, at least turn down your monitor's brightness.
(eg: My screen's brightness only at 15%)
2.) Every period of twenty minutes, take a moment to turn your head/eyes away from your computer to blink a couple times. This will help your eyes re-adjust/focus to prevent soreness.

I mostly switch between this and reddit so maybe its similar to that kindle feature where the pages switch from black to white. Nice.

Also, for windows, you can use the magnifier application to invert colors.

if i knew how to make a skin i totally would. i think most of the problem was straining my eyes trying to follow two-foot-wide paragraphs on my wide screen, i switched to graphite and it helped alot with that.
