So I just got this sweet galaxy nexus android smart phone with 4g and mobile hotspot. This is my first smart phone and first time even tiuching the android OS. The nexus galaxy uses ice cream sandwich (v. 4.0 android os). The point of this thread is pretty much me asking for help on the ins and outs or android. Mudt have apps and widgets or features to take advantage of.

Anyone else have an android smartphone? Wat do.

I just got the Motorola Electrify (powered by android) today!

:D:D:D

I'm trying to find the "swype" application. I'd recommend it to you if you can find it and if it works on your thing. They had it at the place I bought it, but I can't quite find the application oddly enough.

It's essentially for the touch screen keyboard. Instead of "pecking" each key, you slide your finger across the screen. I figured out that you can swap the thumb you're using if you motion to the other thumb and release. I think it's unintentional. But it also made me feel like a badass when I did it.

I got an SGS2 back in September or October. Absolutely love it. Running stock ROM with a rooted kernel. Here's a few things I use alot
  • Seekdroid - This is really the only essential app I think everyone should have, it's the equivalent to FindMyIPhone. Lets you use GPS to find your phone from your computer or another phone, and lets you do remote lockdowns or wipes if your phone falls into the wrong hands
  • Alarm Clock Plus - Useful if you use your phone as an alarm. Has tons of customizability, and lets you do like, you can't turn off the alarm until you solve a math problem or something similar
  • Dropbox - Same as the desktop
  • Amazon / Pricecheck App - I use this to build wishlists (since I never really want anything). You can scan something by the barcode, or just a picture of it and add it into your wish list, card, buy it, or check prices near you. They also sometimes do like a 5-10% off of an item if you can it with their app then order it through Amazon
  • ES File Explorer - Good for getting into a lot of files you wouldn't have access to normally. Good for cleaning up data left over from uninstalled apps
  • Netflix/Hulu - Self explanatory. Since you have a GN, your screen is bigger than mine, and I have no trouble watching movies on the phone
  • Skype / Other messager - Same as the desktop app if you use it. Be careful, some can wear down your battery pretty quick (Skype does occasionally)
  • QuickOffice - If you deal with Office files a lot. I use it to review documents and speeches/presentations before I do them. You can do anything here that you can on the desktop app, I use it a lot to take pictures of design diagrams or whiteboard notes, etc, and send them directly to a shared Dropbox (8mp camera doesn't play)
  • Battery Indicator - This displays a % indicator of your current battery level (which my phone does not do by default). Really small, nice to have

the essentials like Maps, Calendar and the like should come pre-installed. Anything from Google should be free on the Market, so if you use it, you can get it.

As far as games, Angry motherfucking Birds (puzzle), Cut the Rope (puzzle), GLWG (strategy) are mostly what I play. Bunch of stuff out there, just find some genres you like and download the free shit.

If you don't have any good reason too, you don't really need to root your phone. I got along fine without rooting until I needed to have the ability to connect to an ad-hoc network for a project at school (which is oddly not supported by default on android). If you do root, make sure you back up all your pictures and whatever else you don't want deleted, as most roots install a new ROM which can (and probably will) wipe your phone's memory (but not the SD card). If you can, just flash a rooted kernel, I've found that to work better, as that generally doesn't wipe data so you can get root access to backup absolutely everything (apps, app data, anything really). I've also generally found the TouchWiz stock ROM better than other ROMs I've tried.

If you do root, make sure you get
  • AdFree - Blocks ads from ton's of places, even in-game apps
  • Titanium Backup - Can back-up a ton of shit from your phone, but doesn't require a total overwrite on back up like CWM
  • CPU Tuner - Lets you control a bunch of hardware stats, like CPU frequency, etc. You can set it up to have really good performance when needed, but use almost no battery otherwise
  • ES File Explorer - Same as above, but if you're rooted you get more access. Always fun
  • Busybox - Gives you a root level linux terminal directly on your phone. Some apps need this to run, and useful for the odd task here and there
  • Superuser - Obviously, you need this for any app to get root access on your phone

Not sure how I feel about rooting. For one thing I hear it voids the warranty of the phone but I'm not sure if that;s for the manufacturers warranty or the carriers warranty because I pay 7 dollars a month for carriers warranty and I would really rather keep that as this is a pretty expensive phone (700~ USD without contract). Although it might be worth it if I could pirate apps if I can do that with rooting but I think I read that pirated apps are unlocked on the apps software and android OS doesn't really have a DRM like iOS does. Also I'm interested in emulation. I saw a ton of apps on the market for emulation which is great and all but I don't have an electronic payment system yet and probably won't for a while out of laziness.

incredibly interesting though I can't really find anything related to this in the market except for a single basketball game that I'm really not interested in. dayum shame.

Really disappointed with the android market gamewise at least when compared to the apple market. All of the big mobile gaming companies are apple exclusive though android is slowly getting some top rated apps like Street Fighter IV coming over to android which is neat I guess. All they really have is angry birds and one or two popular games that are being offered for free with ads for the full version. I don't even like those games so it's no incentive for me.

So yea. Pirating android apps. I don't suppose there is a pirate bay for this kind of thing or just a huge database like with iOS jailbreaking. I need emulators as they are going to be the only real gaming I do on android.

rooted my phone with clockwork and rom manager, and downloaded cyanogen. But now I have no idea what to do at the root menu, everything I've tried picking just loads the stock rom. I'm hating this.

And this, children, is why we do not jailbreak. :P

If you are rooted and have clockwork installed, you can usually either CM (or any other mod) via Rom Manager or the Recovery Menu. Both are outlined here pretty well, if you haven't seen this already.

That's what I was following. It doesn't tell you what to do once your in the root menu. I've since learned that I'm so supposed to "wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe data, wipe system, select install zip from sd, search for zip (cm7 rom u dloaded) and flash, then reboot."
