Legacy of Hen

Made for the third one hour map contest. This is the version that was tweaked after the contest was up, and it's "finished" to my content.

Specs:

  • Players: Six players, two teams of three
  • Map Size: 128 x 128
  • Tileset: Badlands
  • Genre: Assault, Exploration
  • Force Names: Have absolutely nothing to do with the game, nor does the title

OBJECTIVE

  • To obliterate the enemy team's Operational HQs.
  • To explore the cave you're in.

WHAT THE HELL DO I DO

The players start out with a flare, Operational HQ (Command Center), and SCV as well as 20 minerals to spend, and near a mineral patch to mine. Vision is restricted to your team's flares. Nothing else, not even scanner sweep, will provide vision. Supply Depots will turn into flares, allowing you to further explore the cave and find more ore to mine and increase your economic power. With more money you can create more soldiers and flares, allowing you to gather more lit territory for your team, and also allowing you to destroy your enemies if you find them.

However, in the beginning you're restricted to a small area with a few ore patches by rubble, which can only be destroyed by dynamite (Vultures). Ascending the tech tree will bring in better military units as well as dynamite to clear the rubble. Dynamite is set off when a Vulture (which can't do any damage by itself) sets a spider mine, destroying everything within a small radius of it. This includes ore, rubble, the Vulture itself, and units, which also gives it a military purpose.

There are 8 Geysers (Slave Labor Land) spread across the map where you can make Refineries (Slave Labor Camps) to generate minerals over time. The more you have, the faster the rate of income is.

When you're all set, have your units and economy, have a lot of land explored and lit, it's time to destroy your enemies. Once found, it's good practice to get a light of the area some how and then raid the place, lighting it up and destroying your opponent's flares a la scanner sweep or turrets. Your team wins when all enemy Operational HQs are destroyed.

You gotta play it for the full experience bro. Not every feature is listed here.

SCREENSHOTS

These screenshots are from a replay of a one versus one I did with a random public guy.

The beginning.

My first flare.

BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE. Destroyed rubble so I could explore more.

I love him <3.

My wittle army.

He learned that dynamite blows everything up the hard way. He said the mine wouldn't plant.

LOLOL.

Slave labor land!

As you can tell we've both expanded our territory a lot since the beginning.

Despite being right next to him, I can't see the guy! It's funny how contact is only made relatively later.

FIRST BLOOD.

My army at that point.

I did beat him a bit later but didn't feel like going through a long replay.

Yeah, their damage was reduced by almost half. They still have their use, just not enough to cause a stalemate. Demolishers can easily overtake them.

I like how this subtly refers to the Legacy of Hæn. The idea to make this PvP is so awesome! I have myself been nurturing the idea to make something like Legacy of Hæn since I've first played it. I should really try this on bnet.

But yet, when I haven't played this... don't you find burrowed units provide way too large vision in comparison with spider mines? Also when I read all this my thought went into a different direction... you made me want to try making something like this on my own :)

Some.

I think you're one of the only people to catch that.

Since it does play like an RTS, having so many spider mines scattered around would hamper the amount of buildings that could be placed. Burrowed units provide more vision so that you can find enemies, explore faster, and have more buildings.

First thing I thought of when I read the title. I just assumed it was common knowledge and didn't feel a post was warranted.

When we were playing it after the one hour map contest (and it was with people that frequent this site and I know have probably played Legacy of Haean) no one piped up that it was probably a reference to it.

I was disappointed when the actual map had nothing to do with Legacy of Haean.
