This is a tutorial on how to make custom terrain:
The "viewing walkable terrain+cliff glitch fix" is at the bottom.

VIDEO:

Quote
Step 1) Get a picture of terrain. SC2 uses a brush technique that allows you to 'paint' your terrain. For example, if you have a smilie face, you could do this:

I decided I wanted to make a snow terrain (there are no natural SC2 snow terrains), so I used this picture:

Keep in mind that the smaller the picture, the easier it is to notice that SC2 is just repeating the picture as terrain. Try using a large picture, preferable above 512x512. Also, a maximum of 8 pictures can be used per terrain set.

Quote
Step 2) Get gimp, and a .dds plugin. Google and download both. Currently, the gimp .dds plugin download is down, so use the google version. Download it, and read the .txt file for instructions.

Quote
Step 3) Once you have installed gimp and the plugin, use gimp and open your picture. Next, save it as a .dds file.

Quote
Step 4) Open galaxyedit. Open your map/create a new map with any terrain. Your map must be made with terrain; maps created without terrain cannot get terrain later if you change your mind. I'm guessing such 'non-terrain' maps are meant for 'lost viking' style maps.
Hit F9 to open the 'import' window. Next, right click the window and select 'import file.' Find and select your .dds picture and hit ok. Do this any other terrain you want. Keep in mind, a map can only have 8 terrain types. SAVE THE GAME. You cannot proceed correctly if you do not save.

Quote
Step 5a) Open the data window (F7). Around the top left, there should be the words "data type:" and a pull down menu. Select the pull down menu and find 'terrain textures'. Right click the upper left box (the white area) and select 'add object'. Fill in the Name and ID. Left click the new object.

Click the Buttons the arrows point at in the picture above. If you cannot see the picture, they are the 2 left buttons above the word 'field
in the right box. Next, double click the word 'Texture'; browse and insert your picture. Repeat with 'Normal Map'.
Create a new object for each terrain.

Quote
Step 5b) Go to the 'data type' drop box and select 'terrain texture sets'. Right click any of the terrain texture sets except 'cterrain' and select 'duplicate object'. Hit ok. Right click the newly created object and select modify object. Rename the Name, ID, and Climate if you wish.
Click on the object you created, then unclick the 2 buttons you clicked in 5a. Scroll to the bottom (of the right box). At the bottom, there will be 2 boxes titled 'texture library' and 'texture set'. Remove as many textures from the 'texture set' box as you have new textures. ie: I want to add 2 custom textures, so I remove 2 textures. It doesn't matter which ones, so remove the ones you don't like/that don't fit. To remove, click the texture, then click the remove button. Next, find the texture(s) in the 'texture library' box and add them to the texture set.
Next, go back to the main editor window. At the top, hit Map>Map textures. In the 'new texture set' box, put yours, then hit OK. Save the map. Close the map, then reopen. You have now added new texture(s) to to the terrain, and effectively new terrain to your map.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To see the walkable terrain on your map, go to view>show pathing-> show mesh AND show ground. If you don't see it, try pressing crtl+shift+H a few times.

If this happens:

Hit Ctrl+t to fix it. I've not entirely sure why this was put here...

All this needs is some color and encase-boxes!

tl dr; Make it prettier.

Also, fix the image links to use "direct link".

Yeah... I'm no good with images and forum code. How do I direct link?

Edit: And I demand more minerals for this! This is definitely worth more than 7 minerals.

No need to put colors everywhere: it becomes even more ugly.
Leave the normal text without colors.

For example:

Quote from I">http://www.staredit.net/topic/11588/]I also wanted to make a separated section for this because it is the kind of features that could be useful, even when not prettying up your terrain:
Copying terrain, doodads or units:
-> Turn on 'Selection Mode' (hit 'Space')
-> Highlight what you want to mirror or copy
  • In the case of the terrain, it helps to activate the 'Snap to grid' option. Also, for Terrain layer, it might be useful to know that the selection done isn't shown on the screen.
-> Ctrl + C to Copy
-> Ctrl + V to Paste

Mirroring your selection:
-> Alt + . to flip Horizontally
-> Alt + , to flip Vertically
  • You can "stack" the mirrors (Alt + , + .) to obtain the diagonal flip!

This trick is very useful for melee mapping since it allows you to create perfect inverted terrain. :D

Here's the code.

Learn to use Encase instead of Quotes too. :)

Dungeon Master

Cool tutorial. Well done. Perhaps we should make a little database of cool looking textures ;o

There is an ice tileset in SC2 already, which was either removed for good or for an expansion as seen here. Moreover, we have our own Snow tileset, created by Corbo a while back for his CorboCast tutorial series as seen here.

I agree with this; it would be greatly helpful.This way the textures can be viewed easily and mix and matched between tilesets.

Thank you very much. I hadn't searched for the other pieces for my snow tileset, and now you've saved me the trouble! <3

My theory is that they're saving Ice for an expansion because they want to be able to use animated textures.
