Does anyone know how I can replace the regular sc icon with the new bw icon. My bw cd is broken and it wont install that. Even though I can play brood war maps in single player but for some reason it wont let me play bw online.

The icon and the path to a file for debugging is actually all that is different in the exe file. This is enough that it fails the check when trying to play on battle.net with it as Brood War, though. You need the Brood War exe file to play on battle.net in Brood War mode. If you still have your BrooDat.mpq file, it should have a copy of the needed Starcraft.exe. You could also get the file through one of the downgraders that are available.

You mean if you put the Broodwar icons in the SC exe it works?

Actually, I didn't quite remember it correctly. There are 3 differences in the exe files. There's the icon, there is a text string, and there is some value right by that text string. To change Starcraft's exe to an actual Brood War exe, you would need to change the icon to an exact copy of the Brood War icon, change the Starcraft.pdb text string to BroodWar.pdb and change that value that is near that to match with the one in Brood War's exe. The specific value for that last thing may depend on the version (I suspect it is a type of checksum or similar).

Ok so the reason battlenet wont realize my broodat is because of the icon. Well that sounds right but now where can I download the downgrader plus when I try to extract the files with winmpq I get this vb number number error.

With a little luck and a plate full of Spaghetti I managed to get that old icon gone and the new broodwar icon back. Now I can resume playing brood war with ease + bnet. Furthur thanks goes to ShadowFlare who help me save $22.44. And those who made the downgrader. Now I remember how I got it to work.

Thigh high affectionado

Trust me, the icon has nothing to do with your ability to play on bnet. Its your computer acting up.

Personnaly I changed mine to a inverted wraith, works like a charm.

No, you can't play Brood War on battle.net with a .exe file for regular Starcraft. That is the problem he was having.

Well yeah but I came into 2 problems before it was working on its own.
1.When I extraced the brood war.exe and replaced it with the "new" regular starcraft icon it crashed upon loading bnet.
2.There I thought it was the battle.snp so I extracted that to the folder but bnet wouldnt recognize it.

So instead I put back everything on how it use to be but when I use downgrader it must of picked up the brooDat where it I'm not sure what it really did but modified the old icon into the brood war icon. And since it was outdated then Bnet upgraded that along with the icon. So it was the icon also but you can't just extract it out of the mpq without brood war actually having been installed when its in the older versions like v1.13 or v1.10

If you are extracting the old version from the mpq archives, you do need all the older files to go with it, like battle.snp, standard.snp, and storm.dll.

Why don't you just save up your lunch money for a week JordaN, and go buy the Starcraft Battle Chess for about $10?

Don't know how expensive it is up in good ol' Canuka but its cheap as hell here in the states.

Would fix all your problems.

I know a guy who bought two chests and a second BW. I bought an extra SC when my disc broke.

I think people like us make up the primary income for Blizzard. :D

M'kay, that's why I opened up the box, and the CDs were brand new and, no one had the CD-Keys?

Hastings has damn good deals. Not my fault there isn't a place like them near you.
