I'm not sure if anyone noticed this before, but it is possible to select irregular pieces of terrain.
Ever noticed how, with the Copy/Cut/Paste brush, you can only select rectangular blocks? Well, there's a way around that.
Normally, you drag a box around what you want to select. Instead, try holding down CTRL while dragging. You should get an irregular lump. Mess around with it some more until you're familiar with it.
Win.
EDIT: You can also use SHIFT to add on terrain to your current selection.

Ah. Well, I've never heard mention of it before, so I thought I'd post it up.

Didn't know that. Awesome.

I like using SHIFT and dragging individual rectangles to grab custom shapes. Takes a bit longer, but my hands are sometimes too shaky to precisely grab the tiles I want with free-select.

Yeah, I like Shift better, Ctrl is like a lasso tool.
