Ladies and Gentlemen! I bring before you a map idea never before seen on SEN or Starcraft mapping*! The US Presidential Election!
SummaryIt's simple, you're competing over states to win their electoral votes to win the Presidency. Campaign across states, get endorsements, smear your opponent; do anything to win! You will have to raise funds or choose from Public financing as you campaign from coast to coast.
How You Can HelpI'll be needing a lot of feedback on this map. I want this to be a map where a lot of ideas come from you guys, the community; YOUR VOICE WILL BE HEARD. All ideas will be considered if they are within reason. I need lots of input, because I have a lot of ideas and I can only implement so many; There's a lot of ideas I won't be able to think of without community input.
I also suck at mapping, so I'll need your help there. And after making this a map, I plan to mod it an make it a SCMLoader map, adding things like candidate portraits, voices, and other cool stuff.
Candidates (Presidential)Democrats
- Barack Obama
- Hillary Clinton
- John Edwards
Republicans
- John McCain
- Mitt Romney
- Mike Huckabee
VP CandidatesDemocrats
- Tim Kaine
- Kathleen Sibelius
- Evan Bayh
- Joe Biden
Republicans
- Tim Pawlenty
- Mark Sanford
- Sarah Palin
- Bobby Jindal
Current Key DecisionsShould D.C. be visitable, part of Maryland, or automatically given to the Democrats?Washington D.C. is the only place in the country that has voted HEAVILY Democratic in EVERY election, including landslides. The benefits of making it visitable means you are truly fighting over all 538 Electoral Votes, but it'd be almost fruitless for a Republican to win. Making it part of Maryland means that it's worth more and a better target for Republicans. If it's automatically given it makes sense but if the Republican wins in a total landslide (535-3), maybe he would have wanted those extra 3.
Resolved DecisionsWhich Election?
The election has to be recent (1960<), and preferably with only two major candidates. I'm thinking that either the 2000, 2008, or a fictitious 2012 election are all possible.

Make the water actually blue.

I like this concept. So how do you do gain votes? I assume you run campaigns in individual states (for a cost of course). What else can you do?
Win by luck, lose by skill.
I have decided on the election year:
2008.

i concur that backround for the water is horrible. you need not make it water but change the color. too hard on eyes. great idea for map though
None.
Will votes be automated? Or will other players vote on the winner based on their performance? What kind of interesting ideas do you have for campaigns or other things that will effect the outcome of the election? Also, I'm pretty sure that 90% of Battle.net is clueless when it comes to American politics, so I dunno ><

I changed the water to water; it's now easier to look at.
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/2096/aquausa.jpgNorm>> Votes will be determined by how you and your partner play and your performance in doing so. It's looking like it's going to be four players: 2 Presidential Candidates and two VP Candidates.
None.
What's wrong with Michigan?
None.
you squished it longitudinally (-->MI<--). The upper peninsula is bigger too.

Dumbass. You made the Great Lakes "Border Lines", and parts of Canada and Mexico into Water.

Make a way to commit suicide...
...so I can pick Huckabee every time and then kill myself for being such a complete idiot.
Just kidding... sort of.
My suggestion is simply to make the concept of the map be a micro battle in each state. The ones that lean heavily one way or the other get significant unit advantages, and you could make DC like a Battlecruiser versus a marine or something. =p
You could influence "key states" by fighting with your president or vice president unit by sending it in, maybe with a limit of 5 states per candidate and 5 for the VP. You could also use a few smears in various places and get a queen with spawn Broodlings, etc.
I think that would be a ton of fun and if you used realistic and winnable examples from melee the map would have a decent chance of being popular, and at the end it would probably look pretty accurate if you balanced the matchups right. I'd say you should probably merge the numbers from 2000 and 2008 when figuring out how to balance the map so that the democrats don't have such a significant advantage as they did in 2008.
If you do decide to use this concept, the image in this section of the Wikipedia article will probably be very helpful.

Make sure to include the Supreme Court and some congressional members. This would be amazing if it became a farce map, rather than taking the election seriously. Have G.W. Bush flying around in a wriath randomly destroying things all over the map, and if your candidate comes too close to him, you get a random Bush-ism displayed to your screen, have all kinds of demographics represented, conservative christians, aethisits, gays, blacks, ect, and make them as stereotypically stupid as possible for the greatest lulz.
E.x. Travel to Philadelphia: Negro Johnson: DAYAM BITCH! OBAMAZ MAH BOY DAWG!
E.x. Tenessee: Father White: How can you possibly think you are worthy of governing our nation, Jesus is our true leader! BE HEALED *turn into battlecruiser and zap you* BE HEALED BE HEALED JESUS IS THE LORD!!!
E.x. California: Arnold: I'LL BE BACK..... FOR THE PRESIDENCY *turn into 9999 hp Goliath*
Huge potential for the lulz.

I'll be making a serious version, a semi-lulz version which is just John F. Kennedy vs Jimmy Carter, and a totally lulzed version.
Dumbass. You made the Great Lakes "Border Lines", and parts of Canada and Mexico into Water.
I did that on purpose.

I want to hear more about the gameplay. There has been no talk yet as to how to game would be specifically played.
I have some ideas: like you have to keep units from crossing the mexican border during a short minigame, and the person who does the best nets texas, but hurts their overall Latino vote.
I think this should be an open community map with version control.

You rang?
There should be dumb propaganda and stealing votes through voting machines like Bush.
None.
I agree with the texas minigame. It'd be tight if each state had a minigame that 2 opponents would have to battle and each minigame wins u the state, but perhaps has a minor set back (the -latino vote was a good idea) to add strategy to the game.

I don't have the gameplay quite thought out. The idea is for it to be an open community map(s) in a way.

What do you think of my suggestion?
