The search tool is stuffed, so anyway I heard you can increase unit speed by making burrowed zerglings underneath a unit, and making them unburrow. Is there a tutorial anywhere that will show me how, or does anyone know how?

You can decrease unit speed by creating burrowed units under them.

What you're saying might theoretically be possible, but I doubt anyone's done it before. =o

What you probably read was that you can slowdown a unit via centering a burrowed unit it the whole time (using hyper triggers) and to have a faster ling, stop moving the unit.

Otherwise there's no way to speed up a unit other than though their natural upgrades where available.

However there's methods to increase the whole mapspeed. Check the Wiki.

There's also a method to only increase preplaced units speeds.

@ZachT ok what's that method? Because I could use that just as well.

If there isn't any other way, I've got an idea with unburrowing units and timed locations that could speed things up, just need to work out the triggers a bit better.

Yeah I already knew that, I thought you meant individual units, like choose to make a single ghost faster, that is preplaced.

There IS a way to do this, actually.... I don't know if it'll help, but hey, you never know, right? Btw, this only works for units than can upgrade speed.

Basically, if you have 2 units that can both have speed upgrade run in opposite directions and collide, they will move in a 90-degree angle from their path. (If they clash horizontally, they will move either up or down.)
Usually, they go up. They move at incredible speeds, but you can garuntee this using precise locations.

Units that this works for:
Zerglings
Hydralisks
Zealots Marines (Stim can upgrade it, they need to be stimmed for it to work)
Firebats (Stim can upgrade it, they need to be stimmed for it to work)
Ultralisks
*Lurker
*Scarab

*There are 3 exceptions to the "Upgrade unit speed only" Rule. 1 is the Vulture. It may be possible, but I've tried testing it, and I've never seen it happen, so I personally would rule vultures out. (They can upgrade speed.)
The second is the lurker. The lurker CAN do it, but it only moves a little bit before switching directions. You cannot upgrade a lurker's walking speed through zerg techs.
The third is the Protoss Scarab. You cannot upgrade it's speed, but It moves faster than normal when colliding with another scarab.

The unburrowing trick you're thinking of doesn't work. Whoever told you that was telling you a load of crap, or they don't know what they're talking about.

No sorry, I cant really do that as it's for an RPG. I reckon the zergling thing was me misreading and forgettting what I read about zerglings slowing down stuff, but I worked out a way to make it look good, using map speed increase, and unit slowdown with lings.

I had tried this out before, and some units were faster than others. Now when I try it, those placed before the scarab are unkillable, provide no vision, and you can see them without fog of war, and immobile.
Meh, this is the map I edited and had some units faster than others, but it's gone now. http://www.staredit.net/maplantis/index.php?sid=2cda3e4459;topic=1151
