What should I buy?

I just recieved a $500 dollar scholarship that can be used for anything pertaining to music, and I decided to see what everyone at SEN thinks I should buy.

My thoughts are to buy a moog etherwave -- http://www.moogmusic.com/theremin/?section=product&product_id=21307 -- which I would have to pay only $40 for new (I could always check ebay).

Any thoughts? GOGOGO.

Lord of the Locker Room

get a mic that doesn't suck

put rest into whatever

Show them your butt, and when you do, slap it so it creates a sound akin to a chorus of screaming spider monkeys flogging a chime with cacti. Only then can you find your destiny at the tip of the shaft.

Just Here For The Pie

The second I saw Moog, I thought, "Ew, I hate Moog," but checking out the Etherwave Plus, it actually looks like fun.

As fun as it may be, I would probably get bored of it in a day. It would sit on my desk collecting dust and entertaining company for years to come.

But, uh, then again, this was never really about what you think about the moog etherwave, was it?

I am just saying that, if I bought it, it would end up being a waste of money. It is just an opinion.

Maybe you, on the other hand, would find a greater joy of having it than I would.

I take lessons on piano already, I play violin and all of percussion. Not much else I want to take in the means of lessons. Although, some money can go to piano lessons.

Lord of the Locker Room

wish I could learn violin. That's one of the few things I want to do before I die. Ah well.

Get a real microphone.

I've always wanted to play guitar like Tom Morello, any suggestions on guitars and cheap amps/effects pedals? I know I could get a simple synth pedal for about $35 and a Fender Telecaster for about $400. But I doubt I'd be able to use the Fender Telecaster in all its glory.

Guitarwise, I would get the following:
Oscar Schmidt OE30 hollowbody - $100 or so on Ebay (I already have one)

Digitech Hot Rod (has alot of distortion sounds, never owned one but heard videos, sounds great) - $40 on ebay

Old Silvertone tube guitar Amp - Around $200 (make sure it works!)

OR
Crate v18 $150-$200

Digitech Hardwire DL-8 Delay/Looper (sound great, really amazing pedal) - $150

If you get a synth, maybe like a MicroKorg or MicroX and get a nice bass amp, e.g. an Acoustic B50 or B20 and some guitar pedals (Digitech and it's Hardwire line are generally nice, Boss is okay and EHX sound great but are very expensive and often feel kind of flimsy).

If you really want a telecaster, get a mexican made one, they play and sound great and are alot less (the American prices are just ridiculous for factory assembled, bolt-on neck guitars). Get a decent size tube amp, like a crate v18, the aforementioned Silvertones, or a tube/solid state hybrid like a Vox Valvetronix. A bass amp can work with guitar, but you generally won't get any built in distortion (you'll need a distortion pedal).

Maybe I should start off simple -- $100 guitar. What do you think about that simple set up? I would still have about $350 left for accessories, maybe a microphone, and piano lessons.

I really would not suggest that kind of set up. Most likely you will find it to be of a very low and disappointing quality. I'd say it's generally better to aim alittle higher, as you won't end up with junk you can't sell (like I have a pretty nice amount of).

If you want simple and good quality, go with http://store.guitarfetish.com/xvsicusobo.html or one of the other Xaviere models, or a Yamaha.

Get a good amp (you're not going to get very much with a starter kit). It makes alot of difference. Crate's tube amp series seem pretty good, and Epiphone and Fender offer some small tube amps in the $200 dollar range.

A good microphone for instruments, like a shure sm57 is only $100 tops (you can get them for about $75-80 if you look) and a good vocal microphone can be as little as $69.

Thanks for the site, I've been just browsing Guitar Center and that site has guitars at half of GC's lowest price :D . I like the way this one looks. Heh, this one looks good too.

Just a few quick warnings: You need to pay for that site with a credit card/paypal and your billing address must match your shipping address! If you get things delivered to a P.O. Box you'll probably need to get a friend to order it and reimburse them. Also, some of the guitars are shipped out needing work... but you take that risk in this price range (you can always ship it back and order another).

From what I've seen these guitars are nice, youtube has some nice sounding demos.
